Although an atheist and the bible is inconsisent, historically inaccurate and basically (IMO) a bunch of lies, if you take religion out of the equation, some of the old testament make cracking stories.

The bible (and religion in general) is for people who are scared of death, and what will happen to them afterwards.
Somebody came up with the great idea of telling all these people that unless they lead a sin free life they'd end up in the gates of hell.
What's even sadder than the person that thought that peach up, is the brain dead muppets that believe it!
Religion is the cause of too many of the problems we see in the world today, most of the wars that have been fought, and the quicker the brainwashed wake up and realise that they are worshiping a load of old boll0cks, the quicker this world can sort itself out!

Not a bad read, a bit dramatic and a little confusing (author(s) can't make their mind up if there is one God or three of them).
On a serious note has some interesting stuff that can be applied to your day to day life (like any good religous book), especially in this Police State World we are heading into.

Much the same here. Studied it for O Level Religon. Am now also an Athiest. Load of rubbish total fiction. Religon heaven, hell, ten commandments and all the other crap in it was a way of trying to control the masses hundreds of years ago - be a good boy or you'll go to hell etc etc. Religon is responsible in one way or another for more Wars than any other reason. FFS wake up and smell the coffee.

Which one? Are you talking about the bible which was translated from Hebrew, after a crash course in Hebrew, in to Latin, then the King James version (The most popular bible in England) translated from Latin, by a dodgy Scottish man, into English?

Absolutely, how adults can take that as their gospel I have no idea. I was brought up catholic and though the bible was a load of crap when I was a boy. And as an adult I still feel the same.
I don't begrudge people living a life thinking there's a god (of any type/name) and let it guide them (i'd call id foolish or easily led though); but what really gets me going is when they use the same bul**** text to justify wars, segregation and the like. Aargh, really gets to me.

I found the bible to be very useful at times in the past.
Especially the Gideons edition in hotel rooms. The cover is exactly the right size to tear off, fold in half and insert into the card holder to ensure the aircon remains on whilst I go out to launch a few beers down and tuck into a lovely curry.

Shame the bible was written 70 years after the "event". Just had an interesting discussion with my wife about Easter, and it's origins. She was shocked to discover "Easter", a pagan celebration of fertility, was hijacked by Chritians.

I'm really annoyed at people who just dismiss the Bible. There is an awful lot of interesting history around this book from an English perspective (the Crusaders etc)
Additionally you can't really dismiss the Bible out of hand when you consider it is about a carpenter's son over 2000 years ago....nothing special yet a large percentage of the worlds population follow this ideology.
There is a wealth of useful information in the Bible that everybody can draw upon
Try getting a scientist to tell you how the universe was really created? Nobody really knows for sure

Davegtt, where did I say I have a problem with those that follow religion?? I don't have a problem with anybody that does, I just personally believe that it is responsible for so many atrocities in this world as to make that belief laughable.

I'm not religous in anyway, but can understand why people are religious, with the world as it is today, alot of people use religion as a way to believe that there's hope for all of us. Theres worse things people could be doing.

i read the bible many a time, it has Gods words in it and alot of fabrications, people should at least show respect tae Gods words in it.
some nice parables i really enjoy , for me it woz a personal thing being a muslim, jesus is oor messiah as well, peace be upon him and growing up and at school when at xmas and easter u r taught he is God and he died for yer sins that woz total blasphemy in islam, coz we luv him tae bits and he is the messiah a servant of God like the prophets and messengers before him and after him, it woz confusing coz at school they would teach the above and also that he died when in islam he didnt die but rather God saved him and raised him up alive and it made tae appear tae his enemies they killed him, it woz a test tae show how vile and evil and hard hearted they had become.
an innocent man came and taught them the righteous life and words and how tae treat fellow humans and deal justly and those evil rabbi;s who were corrupt and minting money like the catholic church of old and corrupting Gods words tae suit their own and treating fellow humans like dirt and tae be exploited and became too extreme in their religion, jesus peace be upon him came tae teach them tae sort their evil ways oot, for that they went against them and tried tae kill him, he woz threatening their power in the synagogues.
the lies they fabricated against him and his mother who we believe woz a virgin and he woz created as a miracle as adam woz, God said he and he woz.
