some ridiculous comments on this thread, its still a third world country. Not sure what people expect ? one that gets me is the reference to culture? what do you want ? people to go out getting p1ssed every night and drug raped ? is that what you call culture ?

you might want to think back to 1947 when the imperialists left with all the countries best assets (jewels, paintings etc), leaving behind a mess and a million dead in migration.

Why go all the way to India to do drugs and get raped? You can do all that in Ipswich.

Having just visited family in India recently I have to say that nothing annoys me more than people going to India, sitting in 5 star hotels and coming back thinking they've seen all there is to this amazing country!!

Yes, it has poverty, yes it has many wrongs but it is probably the most diverse country in the world, with approx 20 states, 30 odd national languages and still only one government!!

As I've heard from others - if you want to ask if God exists - just look at India!!

you know fk all about it fella, what does Ghandi have to do with it ? he was the one who didnt want a broken India, a man of peace.

You might want to question why the imperialists were there in the first instance. India didnt need them.

it seems to me that people can't accept the country for what it is.

Ghandi was the epitome of peaceful protest. A humble, noble man who possessed immense courage and moral fibre. His principles never wavered and his quest never faltered. Western dignitaries questioned the concept of holding dialogue with a man who insisted on wearing sandals and a 'dhoti', but that was the essence of Ghandi. As to why the Imperialists were there? To be fair it did have a positive effect. Britain poured a lot of energy and resources into the area to make it 'The Jewel in the Crown'. Although it may seem unfair to practically annexe a country and take over the British Raj did have a lot of positives. However after being there for so long they should have clarified all the territorial issues and not left things in such a mess IMHO.

Well said there, ERA.

It has happened to all those countries that were once invaded by other super-duper highly ambitious powers. Those countries were broken down, robbed and left in tears. After 1947, India was left at least with Railway and some good British architecture, which was a fraction of what they took from India- it's dignity, then-existing and further opportunities of prosperity. But you check some West African countries, now emancipated of French rule; you behold nothing but just a total ripped off scene with hardly any positives left behind! Nothing to do with climate, the countries have been made dry of gold and diamonds, deprived of their own art and cultural heritage. Antiques and artefacts are still being shifted illegally by Americans and other Europian countries on daily basis.
In their current state, such countries are bound to seem rough, and a real struggle, but India is a secular and a peace loving country, standing in the middle of the Indian ocean with open arms for all! Some will love it, some will loathe it. India bears no grudges against British Raj, it's all in past. It has moved on, it continues to pick the pieces, and carries on moving

I think some pics would be useful! Here are some from my holiday in 2006

Kerala backwaters (they call it gods own country!)

Day out with my cousins near their house

Have to be careful on the roads though!

Simla, view of himalyas from my bedroom window

Indoor pool at same hotel in Simla ( Formerly Lord Kitcheners summer pad!)

And after all my sinning, this is where I went for forgiveness! One of our most holy places, the golden temple at Amritsar

Did have loads more pix but lost most when my laptop was stolen

I think you're referring to EOKA-B as opposed to the original EOKA. The former having full state and civil support the latter largely seen as a terrorist organisation.

true einstein, mashallah gandhi woz a great man indeed, so r his grandchildren, a very nice family indeed, india is a cradle of civilization lads for thousands of yrs a mixture of the persian aryan and indo dravidian race fae thousands of yrs and the vedic people of the north and south.

its the lad of my grandparents as in oor original motherland, a country that has mair languages than any other country, races, religions and ideologies and scholars, its an amazing place, britian ruled it for 200 yrs and got their *** kicked fae freedomfighters and had tae retreat at the end, besides its problems its a new country only 50 yrs old and never had a chance tae get back on its feet till lately, its getting their and a country which had a muslim president, a hindu prime minister a catholic prime minister and now a sikh one, isnt that amazing, whit country has that in the world none of them , regarding moral culture it can teach all countries a lesson and like other countries it has weakness;s , if u look at how britain woz built as woz uganda and other ex colonial states and also world war 2 and the arab world and uae, it woz built by people fae the indian origins as in indians, pakistans, afghans, bengali;s , sri lankans etc etc

the arab world and the western colonies of the past would be **** all withoot the indian people who built it on their backs, look at dubai, bahrain, saudi regime, all built up by the people fae indian origin who slaved for these b@stard corrupt folks and for britain and fought their wars for them

i say , india is an awesome place, it will be a superpower once, its a country of kings , so many kings of different religions and races over the last thousands of yrs, no one has a history like that at all

deep, nice pics, kerala looks beautiful, my grandparents family come fae lodhiana in punjab and wifes family fae jallander before they moved tae punjab in pakistan.

sis turbohot lol u fae rajasthan nice one,. u a daughter of kings then , u a rajput or whit, u seen that film yet jodha akbar, my hero hritikh plays king akbar, luv the lad

Nope I was referring to EOKA, remember Cyprus was part of the ottoman empire until it was formally annexed into the British empire in 1914. Up until then the Greeks had little say in how "their island" was run.

EOKA is also the reason why my Dad has a bullet scar in his shoulder, serving as a 19 year old sailor in 1958

Blimey I can't believe the response to this thread. No-one seems to have commented on the most important point of my original post though: i.e. the way Western businesses think that paying employees 100 quid a month is a great way of boosting their profits at the expense of their original Western workforce. That may be a half-decent wage in India, but I don't think they're doing it for the Indians' benefit. Does everyone else think that this is a good way of doing business? I think it stinks.

Just for the record, I generally enjoyed my stay and will probably be going back again in the winter. I can also confirm that the people I met were all very friendly and that I felt very safe there.

a) China: no trade at all till they get shot of the Communists.
b) India: Western employers should have some min. wage restrictions like we have.
c) Africa: the above situation hasn't really arisen yet (outourcing), but if and when it does then select option b)

Turbo, the point regarding the loss of western jobs to developing nations got a bit lost in your saying that India is one big ****hole!

You have to understand that such comments will stir emotion. I'm British, and would bleed to keep the red on the red, white and blue (heard that on some film ) but still have an emotional attachment to the birth place of my parents. Many other Brit Asians will feel the same, so sweeping statements about a sub continent of close to 1 billion people will obviously stir things up a bit.

I don't think your comments were in any way racist, I think you were just in culture shock after spending a few weeks in a third world country undergoing rapid industrialisation.

India is polluted, manic and has poor infrastructure but when you compare it to other third world countries (ie African) it is coming on in leaps and bounds both in terms of a stable peaceful government, progressive human rights and its economy
