why do people buy impreza's over hot hatches

I have a 04 Sti and a 06 Focus ST3 in the driveway, for the day to day driving I would prefer the ST. While the Sti is incredible fast the turbo lag is unbelivable, resulting in the constant changing of gears. If I wanted to overtake a car in the ST I could leave it in 6th and the car would pick up, if I done that in the Sti it feels like I am driving a 1.4 unless I drop a gear to 5th or even 4th. The Sti has a higher limit when it comes to cornering but it wallows the same as the ST. The modding costs for extra BHP as also very similar and I know both the cars could achieve 350 BHP very easily.
Each car has it's merits. For speed and comfort it would be the ST every time. For a weekend spin on the welsh A & B roads I'd be picking up the Sti's keys.

ive had two GT FOURS an integrale and a scooby simply because theres more to them than a hot hatch, they have propper engines and they are not as common as hot hatches. the cars feel more special because of the AWD and im an avid rally fan so its nice to have somthing that resembles a rally car. std some of you have a point spend 3 grand on a scooby and i know for a fact it will leave all of your shopping trolleys for dead in all situations! bet a bloody astra is grounded at the first sign of snow! obviously it takes a superior focused driver to drive a focus! lol focus, what a name!

P.S. Nacro, well I don't know about NOT enough power... that's a given.
But I'm running R888's and suprisingly they do grip.... like **** to a blanket, so I never have had wheelspin even in the wet...
I also drive like a grown-up, and save the silly stuff for trackdays, roll on Saturday !

Should have bought a 2.5ltr mate, turbo lag is a thing of the past for the scoob... UK ones anyway. How can you state it's the ST for speed? Comfort, yes I agree... but not speed. 350hp in a FWD car is just silly as well. Once you go over 200bhp FWD cars are no longer sensible drivers cars... and couldn't use the power anyway.
I agree with with the comments about big BHP in a FWD drive car, I was just saying that it can be gained very easily, for about the same cost.

In the dry there is bugger all in it given identical horsepower. You could argue that the hot hatch is the more involving drive, but I won't go down that road as people will start banging on about four wheel drift or something similar, even though it has naff all relevance on public roads.
One area I can understand is safety and stability in the wet. Scoobies do feel very secure. However, those of you talking about racing away from traffic lights from a standing start in the wet are complete fecking idiots. Just because you've got good traction off the line doesn't mean your brakes are going to be any more effective when you have to stand on them.
Ultimately people go for a hot hatch because the performance in the real world is very similar most of the time unless you're prepared to slaughter your clutch from a standing start. They are also a darn sight cheaper to buy and to run. When you move away from the "mine's bigger than yours" arguments the case for the hot hatch is very strong indeed.
