I sold a car on ebay recently and tbh your cars aren't selling because they are not worth what you are asking. All I did was start the auction with no reserve from the bare minimum price, infact it was lower than the minimum. Had a guy call up the next day, asked what I wanted and it was sold.

It was probably worth £500 more than what I got, but it's sold, gone and out of my mind, and cos it was cheap it was sold quickly.

If you don't want hassle you have to price it to sell. You'll lose it in depreciation anyway if you keep waiting.

Quite the opposite for me mate. I've had two people view since mine wnet up in late Jan but were not able to meet the asking price. I've also had many calls via the PH ad but not had any responses to the Snet ad. I feel the price is right for my Type r @£7,500 but would agree that this is not the best climate to shift an Impreza.

Good luck with the sale Ivan you've got a very nice car!!

I think they will find a level, its called cheap sadly, people will be staying away in droves as the government want them to do so there will be a lot of cheap cars and some will cotton on the ok, the road tax is £440 and fuel is expensive but as the car is only say 7 grand its worth a go, so a dissproportionate drop in price will be people interested again, the other worry is that you end up in two years with a grand a year to tax it and 7 quid a Gallon which takes you about what twenty miles, then it will end up in the scapppers for the sake of four new tyres.

Its not just Scoobs, I saved up for my Saab Aero, nine grand, at the moment I think its probably just worth about 6, will just take the company diesel Focus and sell mine for whatever I can get by dropping it until it sells, I sympathise with those who have ended up in negative equity in a car they can no longer afford to run with all the other costs shooting up, at the end of the day its sad but it is a luxury, Diesel Golf Mk 3's (None turbo) can be had for £300, now theres a cheery thought....

Diesels are going up in price, petrol cars are being burnt at the stake.

I'm just waiting for someone wanting to sell their 5 litre TVR for peanuts, or milk bottle tops. Actually, I'd give both peanuts and milk bottle tops for one

Slightly off-topic, but Autotrader is by far the worst for both scams and the "we have 15 buyers for your car NOW, just give us £79.99".

Very irritating.

Always offer them double WHEN one of their buyers actually buys it. They tend not to be interested. I wonder why

Thats what I do - say, "You sell it and I agree to pay £150 ... if you have the buyers lined up then you must be so happy about my offer"

Strange how they never take up my generous deal!!

I'm beginning to wonder why. With a typical 7p per litre extra cost for diesel, a frugal petrol engine rather than a frugal diesel engine is actually more cost effective.

There's going to be a lot more of these tales of woe in the next couple of years.

Think yourself lucky you don't own something _really_ stupid like a Cayenne, X5, or Touareg. Those people are in for a massive reality check.

I don't feel particularly sorry for them . . .Because anyone who drives any of the above mentioned is a complete w@nker!

Cheers!

My frugal diesel can achieve 60+mpg on a steady run, and still manages IRO 40 whilst teaching driving which sees me regularly stationary, moving off/stopping, traveling below 30mph in busy traffic etc, obviously the worst driving habits possible for economy. It also manages to get me from 30-70mph in 5s, matching an 03 STiPPP due to its massive torque A similar small petrol engine wouldn't hold a candle to it. I used to teach in a Corsa 1.2 Twinport which usually managed under 24mpg and had woeful performance. If you want economy AND some poke, it has to be a modern turbo-diesel I'm afraid.

Corsa - 24mpg and £1.09/l - 40l = £43.60 and gets me 211 miles = 20ppm
Fabia - 40mpg and £1.11/l - 40l = £44 and gets me 352 miles = 12.5ppm

37.5% better economy. Over 20,000 miles that saves me IRO £1600/yr

P.S. By the time my cars worn out, I doubt I will be able to afford to replace it at this rate !

I don't agree. They are the ones who contribute the most to New Labour's Trillion pounds worth of personal debt.

They will be crying all the way to the bank once the numbers are in.

Sold my Impreza within a week via SN. I put it on the market for the Glass' recommended price (but did not take into account the extensive mods) and in the end got a little under what I was asking.

Looks like I was fortunate to get out when I did.....

Why? Is it a post 2001 car? Why do you feel you were fortunate to get out of owning your car?

I've thoroughly enjoyed ownig my car. As its not serving its purpose of a main mode of transportation its time to go to a fellow enthusiast. I'd imagine WRX300man wishes fo the same.

Most X5's seem to be bought by middle class social cimbers for their wives to do the school run in, almost certainly on credit to add to their huge mortgages on their bright orange Wimpey home on the local 'executive estate'.

I dont really care about the depreciation on my car as it goes through my business, so gets claimed for against tax each year. If my mental sums are correct, at the moment ( third and final year of going through the books ) it owes me about £1800, so anything over that when I come to sell will be a bonus.

seams like all the higher taxed car owners are trying to flog them and go back to classics, seams to be a few in our scooby club doing that.

selling stuff, i hate it, i just under price everything by loads to help it shift, would rather take a loss then **** about with time wasters to be honest

Thing is it's not just the MPG that is the advantage with diesels now - I only do about 12k miles a year, but got a diesel earlier this year when I changed my car due to the diesel having better performance than the petrol, and me being able to get it re-mapped for EVEN better performance, so even with 140bhp up to 185bhp I still average 50MPG (55+ on motorway).

There's also the fact that diesel engines last longer - I suppose because they've much lower revving.

Then you factor in resale values and diesels really do have an edge - although I do agree if you are buying a banger (sub 2k) then petrol might get you much better value.
