No, i think you're the one who didn't understand my comments about what you'll achive from your protest. Never mind, not worth explaining.

81p on tax is not the end of our overuse of fossil fuels or end of petrol cars .. UTTER CRAP it is OUR government taking the wee wee. Do you think anyone in india of china would survive if they had to pay our fuel costs NO OF COURSE NOT.

You're getting so wound up by this aren't you? End of the day, the chancellor *might* delay the 2p hike. He might. But what are you hoping for? For him to actually reduce taxation on a product which fundamentally goes against their green crusade? Come on, get real.

Yep ... that I am. wound up that is.

My main problem with you at least and people like you is that you are all to ready to agree and be understanding of the people we (as in the majority) voted into power. The power given to us as citizens is to complain and protest where we feel there is an injustice (a right which lots of people in many countries die and kill for), but then you suggest even though that is our right basically we shouldn't bother.

Maybe we should give up the democratic right to vote and just let large corporations choose all of our policies (pretty much US politics).. ?? what do you think.

Yes the government has this "green agenda" and yes reducing the tax on fuel would go against this.... but who the fk said their "green agenda" is the correct approach to be following? They could move tax away from general transport and put that amount on aviation fuel. Do I think we should be able to fly to barcelona for £20 no ... do I think I should be able to afford to drive to work ... YES.

Will labour want to get in again ... of course they will but in the current climate they have no chance as we are all pretty much well aware. There has never been a better time to influence policy as they have to win the support of the public back and anything other than a massive shift in opinion wont cut it.

I want more than a halt on the 2p rise, I want to see a fixed rate of tax on fuel ie fixed cost and a slashing of 10p. Will we get that no chance but aim low get low aim high .... get somewhere in between maybe.

I know what you're saying, trust me. I'm as affected by it as everybody else. BUT. When a government has an ideological mantra, protesting against it is like pissing into the wind. Use your energy somewhere else, like looking at how you can avoid the effects of these price increases, investigating alternative travel options etc etc. Some causes yes, totally agree with you, protest till the cows come home. Protest to get petrol tax reduced? Save your time and energy. This is a new paradigm, it's just a case of when you accept it, not if.

You've obviously forgotten about the Poll Tax You should never underestimate a politician's desire to get re-elected. This goverment doesn't have a green agenda really - it just thought it could garner some extra votes (and taxpayers money) by jumping on the green bandwagon. Now watch them get cut and bruised as they try to jump off it at high speed

And that pal sums it up very well

TelBoy you've voiced your opinion, fine, but if you want to take it further please do it outside the supporters thread. This is here to support the protest, not to discuss if it's a good idea or not. The fact that over 200 people have signed up to actively take part speaks for itself.

Sure, i've no real axe to grind here, just trying (unsuccessfully!) to try and explain that protests against policy mistakes such as the Poll Tax are light years away from protesting against a global shift away from petrocarbons. But you gotta do what you gotta do i suppose. Let's see where we stand in ten years' time.

sorry to sound rude, but people like telboy are the ones who are ready to bend over and take it. the people here who are ready to protest for what they believe is right or wrong are the ones who actually do make differences in this world, even if this protest may not be going anywhere. but even so why cant we try? and if we want to try then telboy and blueblaster why sit here making comments about how its not going to work, why not just leave it, ignore it and get on with your day?

back on to the point, i have had a few thoughts. a while back when this was still being planned, the idea of two protests came up, one where we all did the one on the 19th, and then gained some attention and then did it again on a more busy day like a monday or something and attempted to block up london or a slow drive where we would have more people to help make us noticed. i think if we did this , but had the second protest planned but kept it quiet, then on the 19th we can say we want something done or more serious actions will be taken, and then we will have our 'stealth' protest planned, just like the govornment had there stealth taxes planned??

To everyone who said protesting does nothing ..... does anyone listen to the news. I spent the whole of yesterday listening to it (9 hour drive ) and I think it's fairly clear to those in power that their voters are not happy. Time to keep the pressure up I think. (The lorry drivers were only trying to help themselves by the way and we looking for a 24% drop in their fuel tax)

....

On a seperate note the most interesting option I heard of yesterday was road charging / congestion charging.... whereby you pay less tax on the fuel (say half the amount) but pay depending on the roads you drive on (making up that defecit so in effect this is cost neutral). So if you live in central manchester/birmingham/london etc etc where you can get by not driving to work as public services are pretty good you pay more per mile than if you live in northern scotland where buses wont go.

This could also affect the time of day so 8-10 are peak hours 11-4 are not. This would break up the people driving at these peaks as there is more than enough capacity in our road network (london aside maybe) we just all choose to drive at the same time. Although people would still need to go to work at the same time at least you're not sitting in a row of lorries as they will want to travel outside of these peaks if possible.

Not saying this is possible yet but I think this is the future (I was against this until I actually heard the before and against arguements if you're interested I suggest you look into it yourself). ...

I of course am against this information being used to "track whereabouts" and of course check speed .....

^^ Thin edge of the wedge IMHO & we should never go there!

PAYE must be the best option as we'll all pay the same %age, it's just those that earn more pay more ... I'd welcome the removal of the Govts insidious (sp?) stealth taxes

But unless i missed something, so far the protests have achieved... nothing, haven't they??

Of *course* the Government knows the voters are not happy, lol, it doesn't take a blockade of the A40 to get THAT message through. Gordon Brown has acknowledged the dissent too. And there are rumblings of delaying the 2p increase. If that's worth spending a day on the side of the road for, so be it.

As for a Scooby convoy, now that would be ironic - a totally unjustifiably powerful, fuel-thirsty car leading the way for lower petrol prices, way to go!

In any case, for the time being it looks like lower world oil prices will do the job for you, as they always would. Wouldn't be surprised to see petrol down by 3 or 4p a litre within a week...

If you think every radio station in the country (i know I heard many different ones yesterday ) with senior politicians from all sides of the house, discussing it as one of the most major issues .... I'd say the message is becoming clearer to them.... if you think that's nothing so be it but sitting at home whinging about it and doing nothing would not have brought so much attention.

and I agree performance cars protesting about fuel pricing alone would be ironic but have you forgotten car tax?

Think of it from the other point of view, the fact that people are protesting shows just how desperate for petrol they are - if you were a supplier would you look at protests and think "hmm, people really need my product but they don't like the price, what should i do, lower my price?". No, of course not. A protest might get you a short term reprieve, but in the long term it just reinforces how vulnerable you are, something the suppliers will eventually exploit. But yeah, i understand how you think psychologically that "doing nothing" is the weak option. It might just not be...

As for road tax, the retrospective angle is cheeky, no doubt. But £450 for a big engined, fuel drinking car? Sounds about right to me. As i said before, if this all starts forcing people to re-evaluate, bring it on, the sooner the better.

But Telboy, we don't all do high annual mileages, so doubling my VED is a big hike for the 6500 miles I do each year.
To spite them I would end up using my car more, because it makes more sense economically to maximise the VED vs usage equation.
Equally, as a "gas guzzler" owner I pay more because I use more fuel.... much fairer that way.

IMHO

That's certainly a contrarian view i've not heard before, i have to admit. "Spite" them you might, but you won't for very long, not once you realise nobody is noticing except your wallet, in my humble opinion.

Rubbish. Just take a look at the possible u turn on the Vehicle exise duty rates to see what they will do to win votes.

They are realising they have pushed people too far and are sh*tting their pants!

True to a point, Paul, especially when the government is in real danger of being taken to the cleaners at the next election. As i've said a few times though, you might win this battle, temporarily. You won't win the war. This sea-change is bigger than a line of trucks in the UK. It's unstoppable. And many unstoppable changes have been protested against in our history during the transition. Ultimately though, things are changing, uncomfortable though that is for many. That's the reality.
