Accordingly, I can't respond in a positive manner and try and negotiate an amicable solution at this stage.

I'm sorry if my exhaust is disturbing one/some of you. It is, however, perfectly road legal and the car is driven very gently when started in the morning so as to try and avoid disturbing the surrounding houses. Furthermore a 7am departure is common for people who commute to work by car and hardly anti-social.

If the people affected would kindly contact me in person we can discuss a way of minimising the inconvenience to them over a cuppa. I'm sure you'll agree this is much more in keeping with the spirit of good neighbor relations than anonymous threats. I'm far from an unreasonable person and don't want to cause anyone any undue inconvenience.

I'd go for this option to start with as well and see if you can find out who it is and sort it out amicably.

TBH though, I live in the countryside (as I always have) and the farmers wife up the road from me regretted me selling the last scoob 'cos it was her 2nd alarm, if she heard me starting up and she wasn't ready to go to work then she knew she was late

Different in a town though and I'd rather get on with neighbours than p*ss someone off just 'cos of an exhaust, etc. TBH, lifes too short to **** about with petty squabbles IMO.

Any of you live nextdoor to someone who has a baby? I do.....
I live in an apartmet, and being in Japan, the walls are paper thin!!

Its not like I go next door asking them to kill their baby, just gotta face facts and get used to a baby crying whenever it feels like it.

The same neighbours also have a crappy honda mpv with a massive exhaust fitted, which I hear every morning, but who cares, in all honesty, it actually helps wake me up when I oversleep lol.

Then a case of my car, much louder than anyone else in the whole village, when in my apartment, sounds like a chinook helicopter is circling around lol

If your exhaust is legal, then alls good.

For those saying "change your exhaust", doing that can be very expensive if you didnt keep/dont have your original exhaust

Are, but are you doing 100+ down the M-whatever, texting us your response from your precariously held mobile, with your RC neighbour tied up in a bag in the boot?

Not everybody goes to work at the same time and it is waking people up when they don't want to wake up. Alot of people are experiencing this. The council will have to be informed should you not change your exhaust system"

If these people do complain to the council,is there anything they can legally do to me ?

My car has GT Spec gen II headers and up-pipe with full Hayward&Scott system. I wouldn't say it was illegally loud !
You have a 1996 WRX. This is a) in import so different rules apply anyway, and b) made well before noise/decibels bolox was required on a V5 (ISTR sometime in 2002 EU homogenation bolox).

You also state you have headers which probably means your car doesn't "thrumble" like a PPP equiped car. Basically it reads like your car is legal and if you don't drive it in a manner which causes a nuisance, you should be fine.

I'd show the note to the "old duffers"/neighbours and ask them about it. As they will likely see a few more of the locals around and about, maybe information can percolate back to you that way. I'd also consider mentioning it to any community watch or neighbourhood watch bods around. You are trying to appear as a good neighbour who is concerned about the well-being of those living in the street/estate. If you can't don't talk to them.

The last thing you want to do is try reason with them as they will see it as a weakness and give them more excuses to find something else to complain about. We are a country of moaners and people who decide to be petty will always find something to moan about as they have nothing else better to do.

While I agree 7am isnt that early - its not like you are waking people up at 5 or 6 o'clock, you need to be careful here. I would advise getting an exhaust bung to use when you are leaving at that time, and making sure you keep the revs down and leave the car to idle for the minimum amount of time possible.

Main reason for this - ignoring some of the stupid comments on this post about what other people would do - is that if the neighbour gets more annoyed and goes to the council, they WILL investigate, and will come round and take noise measurements from inside the neighbours house.

If they think it is too loud, and there is a dispute and your exhaust is non road legal then you will lose and you will have no defence. Also, if it goes as far as an official complaint, you will need to disclose this should you ever want to sell your house, which for any buyer as soon as you mention it being about noise, they will run a mile.

Unfortunately unless you live in the middle of nowhere, we all have to get on with out neighbours and show consideration for them, sometimes this may mean just having to bite our lips and fix something we dont consider that much of a problem, but thats life.

In my old house, if I left my car ( with full Scoobysport exhaust on it ) idling on the drive, it would shake the windows and door in the porch. Its not always the obvious audible noise that is the problem, the boxer engine seems to make a lot of vibration which can carry through the floor as well.

Depends on your definition of fully open

In the UK aftermarket exhausts are not technically legal

Good comments

I live on a small cul de sac. Occasionally I go to work on a Saturday at about 5.30am. In the winter I once started my Scoob up and then de-iced the windows and went and had a cuppa whilst she warmed up. Even though my exhaust is totally standard (95 WRX) I could hear it resonating throughout the house, my Mrs went bloody mad. I had wanted to get another exhaust to give it a bit more burble but, I don’t think I could justify the probable aggravation to the neighbours. I like where I live and want it to stay that way.

A local chav in his Barrysaxo is sh4gging a girl over the road, stops over a couple of nights a week. When he leaves in a morning, which tends to be quite early, he pisses everybody right off because he has the obligatory 4" back box and likes everybody to know about it. Obviously doesn’t give a sh4te.

A woman who works with my Mrs (they both work for the local council so am asking them if they can find out the score on this) has a UK 22b, she hates the noise it makes and is very concerned what the neighbours think. So much so that she would get rid of the car tomorrow but, it’s her old mans ‘pride and joy’, its just he can’t drive at the moment. She also likes where she lives.

Also, a note left on you windscreen can be due to a number of reasons including fear. Unless they all know you really well, how are they to know, if it’s an elderly couple or somebody that just doesn’t like confrontation, that they’re not going to bring on a load of grief for themselves.

As said, my Mrs works for the council and often comments that neighbour disputes are one of the biggest issues they deal with. Get this: My neighbours banging their dustbin lid too loud, the baby next door is crying at all times during the night.

Some valid, some not so.

Mine came with a STI standard exhaust which I replaced for a Blitz Nur Spec the day I got it! I love nice exhausts & always change then on all my cars. (though didnt need to on my Chimaera!)

But I also bought a bung the same week as there are occassions when I think it should be quieter e.g. when Mrs & little one in the car! Or e.g if I had an early morning start maybe. The reason I started to think this way was only recently, when we had a baby last year. Before that I couldnt give a monkies how loud my straight through Scorpion exhaust was on my old M3!!
But when I or the Mrs had to spend hours trying to get the litle one asleep so we could have a rest, peace & quiet had more meaning to me. And when a (sorry) a scooby with a straight through exhaust would come visit the house opposite every friday, saturday night at 11pm & keep going up & down it obviously kept waking up the little one. This ****%d me right off but unfortunately thats life & now I can pi&s everyone else off with my exhaust!!

And the moral to the story is..........I dont know.....!!

I live in a culdesac (admitedly large one.. and have had no complaints about my car and get on well with most my neighbours. But we did have some people living a few doors up that were driving modified golfs. They would pul up at night and rev their engines for like 60 seconds before switching them off.. very odd and VERY annoying.

Them driving up and down the road never worried me.. but sitting by my bedroom window (bungalow) reving the nadgers off almost had me out the so many times (it was cold and i was warm)

Yes I agree, I have done a draft proposal for you perusal.

Maybe some other members may be able to assist with this extremely delicate letter.

Right you bunch of whinging t4ats. Who’s responsible for the poxy note left on me motor yesterday morning? If the arsewipe doesn't have the common decency to make them selves known then the old lady at No 14 gets it. I will have you all know that it was my intention to remove the offending article anyway cos I have another one on order from 'the very noisy exhaust shop'.
When I find out who is responsible they are for it....

Signed
