I've been quite surprised by the fuss over this latest lame tax rise. After all, you're only talking about another £200/year or so on a car that's already very expensive to run, insure, etc. It's hardly the end of the world, is it?

Don't get me wrong, I think the whole situation is a joke and loathe the government as much as the next sensible person, but there seems to have been a bit of an over-reaction - just my opinion of course ;-) The other thing worth pointing out is that if they weren't getting it through this tax rise, there'd be something else. They have no choice given their large deficit and overspending.

They should scrap road tax and just put it on the petrol.

They will have to default back to the old rating going by the CCs of the engine. I cant check this on the DVLA as my insurance has just lapsed (not using it).

Its the same with the Mot, they have to find a car that sounds similar and test it against that.
I'm hoping this is the case as I have a '99 evo imported in 2004.

If the car has had the earlier SVA test you should be ok i think all recent imports have to have the ESVA which requires an emmisions figure in order to pass which is then recorded on the V5 so anything imported in the last 2 years will be affected by this iirc

Just to add this car tax also affects pretty much every ordinary family saloon and mpv now so everyone is shafted. There is no escape unless you get one of these Hybrid things

Not quite. My diesel Mondeo goes up to £145, then £150 and £155 over 3 years. Not exactly bank breaking.

I think it will make a major difference to classic values, and newage but not in a good way for them! I'd pay it if I had to, but I would be f*****g p****d off big time - it's a massive jump in price and well not on!!

Sorry should have made that a bit clearer,i meant all PETROL family saloons and MPV also a lot of the new diesels fall foul of this tax scam

also the price of diesel is rising daily so its fast becoming not the most economical of vehicles

yup, believe me I've noticed the price difference. It'll take some doing to bridge the gulf in fuel economy though. At a guess diesels use about 30% less fuel and price difference is currently 5-10%.

Market forces could well close the gap though. Demand for diesels is going to be huge after this road tax hike.

I live in France and pay 0 road tax
Fuel prices are much cheaper too and even insurance is lower not so many thieving ******* around. Didn't even make any difference if I had a cat 1 alarm or a tracker

Just have to try and register it now which is a pain in the **** as the classic STI never came to Europe
Just got to beat the red tape

It theory its a good idea but the cost of fuel if tax was scrapped would make it impossible for people to even use cars as its such a regular purchase.

I'll be surprised if they just jump older car tax to newer cars as the whole supposed reason is for CO2 emissions and if they don't have the data for old cars then it will just be shown up for the sham it really is.

It will get to a point where need outways greed and more money will be put into hydrogen fuel cells. be interesting to see what the justification is then for higher taxes.

What i'm getting at is that if you were to take 2 cars with the same size fuel tank and preferably same model but 1 diesel and one petrol and you put say £20 of fuel in each car you would get considerably more petrol in than diesel thus bridging the gap in economy quite considerably as you would have that extra petrol giving you those extra miles. So not is all rosy for diesel drivers.

It’s the extra tax that makes Diesel more expensive.
Diesel is so much cheaper than super + in France (about €0.20 a litre) and I think it’s the same in the rest of Europe.

The government where quick to tax Diesel more than unleaded as you use less of it.

Fuel is cheaper in France than the UK and we don’t pay road tax but VAT (TVA) is 19.5% so they just get in other ways.
