ok,

What causes the compressor stalling.

to me, i dont think its my dump valve, and it stops, when it hits full boost.

im still no the further on then, its a fluttering noise, that i get between 2-3k rpm. thats all i have, apart from what i read on NASIOC.

Poss any of the Tuner know, Andy F , Bob R etc....

i do know the difference between the bov dumping and the flutter noise i have, it is not possible to dump the pressure while it is boosting up that only comes once you de-accelerate.

Just at the time when the car is boosting (wategate closing) there is a flutter (tss tss tss tss tss tss tss tss) if i was to just press the throttle a little then the flutter would go on for a lot longer

Hmm seems VF28 owners get the exact same issue, maybe it's a characteristic of the Turbo?

How many of you who get the fluttering noise have BOV/Dump-Valves fitted and how many have standard recirc valves?

I have not noticed any problems with the actual boost, I need to wire up my boost gauge soon to confirm however I can't feel anything negative as a result of the sound. Always occurs from around 2,500 rpm as the turbo starts to spin up and then goes away after 4k rpm as I am on full boost or near enough.

With the RA boost loss is not such an issue due to the gears, the ratio's are manic so the turbo just stays spinning until you run out of gears/rpm. I'll try some slower shifts to see if the sound has anything to do with low rpm, checked for leaks etc but not found any.

I am switching to a recirc valve soon so will be interesting to compare the effects (currently have an HKS SSQV with the recirculating kit fitted).

both my scoobys had TD05 turbo's and had the same problem, i had the problem even when i had a recirc on there so i changed it for a bailys and still the same problem.

I might be wrong but i think it may have something to do with the actuator not holding pressure, what do you all think, but as ( GREERWRX ) has the same problem and his car was new i am unsure now.

Right guys been out again in the car, took my mate who has a classic uk2000 scooby. now he says his doesnt do it.

he cant figure it out either. its only under load between 2-3k rpm, and when it hits boost it goes.

Just at the time when the car is boosting (wategate closing) there is a flutter (tss tss tss tss tss tss tss tss) if i was to just press the throttle a little then the flutter would go on for a lot longer
That sounds the same to mine.

if i had a boost gauge fitted, if i had compression surge, would the gauge shoot back to negative pressure (would a boost gauge show if you had compression surge by anyway)

cheers

I have a boost guage and sufferd no loss of boost when this noise occours, drove it for weeks like it untill i thought it might be damaging my turbo.

i have an idea of what it COULD be, tell me what you think. firstly if any of you guys out there are getting this noise then you will know that it is only happening when the car goes into boost and depending on how quickly the boost increases decides the length of time this sound goes on for.

1. as the it goes in to boost the boost controller fails somehow and pulsates which sends pulsating amounts of pressure to the actuator causing the waste-gate to flutter causing the tss tss tss tss tss sound before going in to full boost. I say this as my controller has a very loud ticking coming from it.

on my last scooby the boost controller had the same problem (ticking) but a bit worse when it did really start to give up the ghost the flutter turned in to a really really fats ticking, almost to fast to hear that it was intermittent.

Thanks David

yeah, but mine has done it from new, and since the new exhaust its louder, which made me think the threads ive read on NASIOC could be right.

wastegate, now doesnt have the back pressure from the exhaust etc....

if it is a faulty boost controller, im not happy, as mine has done it from day one.

what i find most anoying is the fact that none of the garages i have been to can hear it.

some people have said that its the dump valve but i know its not as i blanked it off the other day and it still did it.

I didnt think it was the dump valve. what im thinking, is it the wastegate. or one specialist said, their is a valve in the manifold, that stays open and then closes when you hit boost. cant remember what he said it was called, im sure he said something about it stayed open to direct exhaust gases somewhere and then closed, so he said it might be that.

but i still think its the wastegate, as as on NASIOC say that when some guys have tightend up the actuator rod, the fluttering goes or is not as loud. but they get boost spike.

cheers

when i had my last wrx it had really bad over boost, not all the time but when it did over boost it would go from 0.9 bar (max) - 1.3 bar (max).
the turbo would spin much faster but the car would go slower and then hit the fuel cut, i took it to the garage and he tested the actuator and said it was leaking pressure.

my last wrx also had the flutter noise, so the idea you have had i would say could very well be the problem we have regarding the flutting noise.

thanks David

Hi fellas, I know this is an ancient thread but it is discussing as close to my problem as I have seen on any of the forums.

Did anyone get to the bottom of this as the noise is driving me crazy.

I have a 2004 wrx and problem appeared like magic after full decat/remap and not the good las vegas type magic!!!

Any help appreciated......cheers.

Bump! Anyone get to the bottom of this??

You've probably all sold your scoobs by now and have children and sensible cars like I almost did! (got the baby but kept the scoob!)

Cheers,

Peter.
