I can speak from experience about catching someone breaking into your car.
A year or so ago I came out of my flat at uni with two mates and looked towards my car to see what I thought was someone looking in my passenger window. It was then I realised they weren't looking in the window they were leaning through it, I believe my words were along the lines of "OI, WHAT THE FSCK ARE YOU DOING TO MY FSCKING CAR", at which point the little toe rag legged it with me and my two mates in chase, so the point about most people being afraid of being discovered is entirely true, I've never seen anyone look quite so scared. Unbeknownst to us he had his mate round the corner in a car waiting and he jumped in and the car sped off.
Unfortunately campus policy dictated we call campus security who took their merry time to turn up, who then called the police, who also took a while, by which time they were well and truly long gone. Despite a description of the car and partial number plate I've never heard anything to this day about them being caught.
Although at the time my reaction was to try and catch the little toe rag it was probably best that I didn't.
A few hour wait for autoglass and the car window was fixed and insurance took care of the rest at a local garage. (even got a nicer stereo
) Learnt a bit from that little experience, firstly never leave anything visible that can be nicked from the car and secondly that car windows can be broken *very* quietly (this guy jammed a screwdriver/crow bar inside the window frame and just levered the window causing it to shatter, although I'm not quite sure how this would work on our beloved scoobies), my room was on the ground floor no more than 15m from my car.
This was all at Lower Court, Broadgate Park, Uni of Nottingham for those that know it.
Unfortunately the car in question ended up like this six months later:

What an enjoyable thread
Would like to say in my experience that a traffic cop is more likely to book you if you were speeding, say 65 in a 50 its their job!. Check out the Black Rat badges, tie pins, stickers in rear window, a breed of their own, allegedly know as black rats because black rats eat their own, i.e. traffic cops will book their own and are rather elitist.
Whereas your run of the mill officer poodling around in his Astra is more likely to let you off for say 40 in a 30, too much paperwork i'm led to believe.
If your driving like a **** you deserved to be booked regardless.
Dando whats the deal with the black rats, loathed by all other officers??, or is it all a load of bull.

Traffic Policing has changed a lot recently, The black rat name lives on, but traffic Police on my area are now expected to deal with a lot more than just tickets. There is still a certain amount that have to be reached each month, but the quota is only 5 speeders a month, which is not a lot! (which you can give to the most reckless drivers). This leaves us free to deal with people like disqualified drivers who bump up our premiums or help out on area with crime related Policing. There is no animosity in my area between area Officers and traffic!

Hey!!!
I am NOT anti-police at all, they generally do a good job all in all - and I wouldnt like to do it.
My daughter wants to be a WPC and I have had some great discussions with the Thames valley Police, with her future in mind - they have been 100% superb.
Its the way they set up radar traps that upsets me, if its in aid of reducing speed to reduce deaths then fine - set the traps up where there ARE accidents!!!!!!!! what do they do??? they set their traps up where they KNOW people will speed, simply because of the terrain - the hill I am thinking of, you could let a bicycle go down the hill in question and it would do 40mph!!!! I have lived near this hill for 20 years - not ONE daytime accident that resulted in a death, none even come close - it is straight and wide!!
In the evenings, Friday and Saturday, motorbikes MUST get up to 100mph coming down there and have done for years!! my point is .................................................. ............................................. where is Mr Plod then?????
Thats all - play the game fair cops or not at all

I don't think anyone on here would disagree with you, but what you're really talking about is Policing policy, set by politicians, and we all know what a useless bunch of tw@ts they are, without an ounce of common sense between them....
The vast majority of Police Officers in general use good judgement and discretion (e.g. common sense) when deciding how to deal with the public and the law.
For my part, I'd like to see less speed cameras, more driving training and education, higher motorway speed limits and more Police about to nick the daft buggers we see on the roads day in day out, and to make us all feel safer....
Just my penny's worth....

Well said that man. A balanced and welcoming thread for these gents who are brave and honest enough to "come out" in a potentially volatile environment.
I live beside a family-both police officers and he enjoys the odd Friday night pub run. Great neighbour and mate. So what if he wears a uniform? It's what's inside it that counts. Yes the uniform can alter the wearer's personality sometimes like secretary putting on posh telephone voice at work but that is just the job and I certainly wouldn't like to do it - way underpaid for what they do.
All in all, I think these guys should be congratulated for the openess and frankness and they can only be an asset to the board members.
