The second will be 11 sqn at leeming and the third operational Typhoon squadron will be 6 sqn to be formed at RAF Leuchars and you think i am deluded ?? and the prove you wrong yet again call raf Coningsby.I am sure you can get the number

Hey it suits, the amount of threads which appear with you mumbling about how they flew over your house, reminds me of a twelve year old retelling a story of a trip to an air show.

I was going to see if you wanted an insight into how the RAF actually works day to day, as your view that the aircraft in the air must be monitoring UK airspace is wide of the mark. However you can poke it, i have a pint or few to get through, and the rugbys on, which is a much better use of my time.

As currently you are having an arguement about points that haven't been made.

I said initially that and i quote:

Typhoon is currently NOT monitoring the UK airspace, as currently there isn't combat declared Sqn in operation in the RAF.

Wolfie pointed out that they have one sqn which is COMBAT ready, you do know what that means don't you???

To which i said and i quote again:

"The Typhoons you see are in the majority none operational, however are under taking flying/ training duties, i was under the impression that there still wasn't one combat ready Sqn in the RAF, however Wolfie seems to think otherwise and as he is posted in the area will bow to his knowledge."

AS currently Leeming has just lost it's last F3 sqn on the first of the month, and no sqn has moved in, and we are staying at Leuchars for the foreseeable future the rest of the points you raised have no bearing at this moment in time.

I have tried to put it in the most basic way i can. Hopefully in you highly excitable state you will actually be able to read the full post and comprehend what is being posted

Belated Happy Birthday to the RAF and hat's off to those that have served and are serving.

During WWII My father flew Blenhiems then beaufighters (armed to the teeth with 20mm cannon and .303's) - shipbusting, finally Westland Lysanders dropping and collecting SOE operatives into France.

I take off my hat to him Paul, and those Beaufighters were extremley dangerous if they lost an engine just after take-off. Very lucky to be able to maintain control in that situation, apart from all the other risks involved.

LOL.. This thread reminds me of 'conversations' I used to have in the pub when I went back home for the weekend.

I'll give this guy his due.. I have no idea how he found out but he figured I was in the RAF (probably the haircut.. ) so he just kinda latched onto me. Like I REALLY wanted to talk about fast jets and air ops while I was home for the weekend enjoying a drink with the old man! :/

But it turns out this guys was a frequent spotter at Coningsby.

Anjyway, it wasn't particularly the 'shop' talk that bothered me.. it was the stuff he used to come out with. At one point I got quite wary of him.. wandering if he was 'fishing'.. but then I just figured he was an over zealous spotter!

He used to sit there blethering away and telling me what MY squadron was doing, at first I used to tell him he was talking crap.. but then just drifted into nodding in agreement and hoping he would go away.

Sweeping statement and difficult to define better.

Personally i prefer the Hurricane to the Spit, i know it is not quite as graceful looking but i just love the business like look of it.

Both had their advantages and disadvantages - both truly great planes.

if just talking the BoB and MkI&II Spits and Hurris then;

No too sure if the Hurricane was better, more of them about, easier/quicker/cheaper to repair and able to take more punishment. Easier to fly for the less experienced pilots - yes, maybe.

Spitfire was slightly quicker, had a greater rate of climb and turn which made it a better plane to dogfight in.

Spits usually engaged the German fighters whilst the Hurris went after the bombers. Most German pilots would claim to have been shot down by a Spit rather than a Hurricane, more to do with the name

Hurrican better, no not really, not for me anyway, both did an excellent job for their pilots.

Lets not foget that they are the tools with which the pliots did battle day after day against terrible odds and they are the heros

You would not see a Spit take the tailplain off a bomber heading for central London. Hurricane did it.

Can anyone explain the role differences between the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (des RAF JCA) and Typhoon?

Why not go the whole way and take the advanced Multirole JSF and adapt it to specific roles as they did with the Tornado?

No, the pilot did that, could have been in a spit of a hurri, yes he was in a Hurricane and a brave chap at that!

I thnk you will find a few stories about Spitfire pilots using their planes as weapons once the ammo ran out or guns jammed. The Hurricane example is a famous one as it happend over central London and was seen by 100's of people, not over the fields of Kent. Does not take away from the act of bravery by the pilot mind.


The spitfire was by no means fragile and could take a lot of punishment as well as dish it out.

The Hurricanes strenghts was also it limiting factors, its construction, wing shape, etc meant it could only be developed so far. It stil had a lot of work on after the BoB in Gibraltar and the middle east.

Some of the arguments that the spotters get into on the plane nobbering forums over the minutiae of subjects are incredible. They take their hobby very seriously.

The JSF is due to replace the harriers whenever it gets operational, i was base on Harriers at Cottesmore and was told they were due to be de-commensioned around 2013
But i doubt it will be as early as that as i believe they are having major problems with the JSF. They are producing 2 variants of the JSF one with vertical take off and landing capabilities which we are getting to replace the harrier (the one their having problems with) And one that doesn't which the yanks are getting for their super carriers which we don't have.

...I suppose this isn't the time that I say those of us in Green would rather the RAF had spent their money on new Chinooks, more Merlins, heavy lift aircraft and a replacement for the flying deathtraps (a.k.a. Tristar) rather than waste it on the giant flying ***** that is the Typhoon?

Anytime the Typhoon Sqn's feel ready to stop showboating around the sky's of Lincolnshire and actually come and do something operationally useful feel free. Same goes for that bunch of egotistical Hawk pilots; any chance of painting them a sensible colour and sticking some rocket pods on them? Not meaning to be rude old chaps.. but, it would be jolly good if you could find some time to come and join in with our little wars and what not..

I agree with you about buying more chinooks, but not more merlins i know a few lads who have come off them and i believe from what they say is that they are truely awful, apparantly the Merlin sqns have the highest PVR rate in the RAF, even higher than when i was at Cottesmore on the mighty harrier. I also remember coming back from Afghanistan last year on the mighty Deathstar, we were crammed on like sardines the amount of bagage in the hold was scary enough and then everyones hand luggage was obscene, i'm telling you the poor little tristar stuggled to get airbourne, i was ****ting it !!
But i don't agree with you about the Reds though, i'd love to get a tour on them before i bang out i know there's no garuntee on getting on the flying circuit with them but i'd love to give it a try.

Don't forget many of these decisions about replacement aircraft were taken 20 years ago.....

Too many politicians getting their 2 peneth in on TV and trying to look good sat on their leather chairs rather than putting money where it really matters supporting the boys and girls out doing the graft.

I think you'll find the same support for some decent round the clock CAP and precision bombing support by the RAF rather than relying on the Americans so much...

You don't know how much it pains me to think that a few US carriers carry more combat aircraft than the RAF.....
