Once my car failed on a number of things and one of things was that the sunvisor was within the sweep of the wipers (only slightly), but the examiner was taller than me, maybe if the car had only failed on the sunvisor he might of let me away with it but I needed to get the other tings sorted anyway.
In N'orn Iron the MOT centres are part of a government department and run by them so you can't go to a garage or anybody else to get tested, you have to go a official MOT centre so if you do fail the the re-test money goes to the government and not somebody's back pocket.

What a jobsworth. Needless to say they've lost your custom over it! Incidently a guy at work once had his car failed by a well known jap main dealer beginning with T. The reason was his churchill nodding dog was too far within a certain radius of the centre of the steering wheel. What an outrage He should of been at least shot for having a nodding dog!

My usual MOT station closed down last year, so this year i had to try somwhere new. The manager was on reception and kept saying how he loved subarus and how he'd owned a few. Turned up an hour later to find it had failed as the side lights would not stay on without the ignition on......
How many subarus you had again boss?

If this was the sole reason for the vehicle not gaining a MOT you are within your rights to return to the testing station and inform them of the following :
Advice to vehicle presenters the vehicle presenter should be advised of and given the opportunity to remove any item likely to fail under Reason for Rejection 1 b or 1e before a VT30 is issued,
Some bedtime reading MOT UK car and vehicle MOT information equipment car servicing parts and spares - power steering
If the testing station are demanding a full restest fee for this sole issue I would report them to the VOSA.
