The current pound coin doesn't have the number on, so what's the issue?
If you read the site, this is only a set of new reverses, I can see nothing to suggest that the numbers will not be on the front as they are now (the £1 notwithstanding)

As for why we have to change - Why not? For exactly the same reasons as you mention - Money is money. You might find that the tooling at the mint was due for renewal so it's effectively a no cost option.
We have been having all sorts of different designs commemorating various things on £1 and 50p coins for ages anyway - so it's not like they are consistant to any great degree.

The numbers aren't on the front (the queens side) at the moment. The reverse side (the design side), has numbers and letters at the moment. The new designs only have letters it seems

Ah. Another bone of contention. I pull a coin out of my pocket that commemorates 'National Goldfish Day' or something and have to look twice to make sure I haven't got some Micky Mouse money by mistake. Why not just keep them the same? There is NO reason to change other than someones job/ego at the Treasury!

The new design was done by a member of the public through a competition.

Be pretty cool to be the person that came up with the winning design though. I mean it's a bit of a legacy - especially if it turns out to be the "last" sterling coin issue.

The new designs have been chosen via an open competition which was widely publicised in the national media in August 2005 and attracted 4,000 entries.

Individually they look as though they slipped half out of the die when they were being struck. They are just a meaningless hotch potch and the dropping of Brittania is a symbol of the attempted destruction of this country!
