I believe it is legal to take your seatbelt off when reversing, think I was told to do that by driving instructor when learning but that was a long time ago so that may not be accurate. I think its stated in the highway code aswell.
Dont quote me on that tho.

Exemptions from seat belt wearing
The legislation provides for a number of specific exemptions from the seat belt wearing requirements on medical and other grounds. Please consult your doctor if you think you should not wear a seat belt on medical grounds.

These people report stats on how many people have been killed with airbag related accidents, so they "can" cause death, although you can never be sure what will happen.

You could get shot by a gun... they cause death... doesnt mean your gonna die though does it...
don't take it personally but what's rife on the interweb is people repeating what others have said without investigating the facts themselves...perpetuating stupid urban myths.
Wikepedia is a rubbish source the article you have pasted above is spot on though, thanks

Tests at Mira and RTRL have shown that with a combination of NCAP 4 and 5 stars, seat belt and airbag a passenger can survive accidents at sppeds of up to 60+ (I didnt say walk away) but remove any one of these safety devices and the driver and passenger will struggle to survive much above 30 .....
Always wear a seat belt. You are a dick if you dont.

                    Why are taxi drivers exempt?

I guess Im a little late, but i might aswell say it, did anyone actually bother reading the highway code?

Kinda sad that most people on here dont know some of the most basic rules of the road.....

89-102: Rules for drivers and motorcyclists : Directgov - Travel and transport

I cant imagine driving without a seatbelt, as mentioned, it feels unnatural not wearing one, even when im just moving my car around my apartment.....

Wearing a seatbelt is one of the most basic things about driving. Anyone who questions wearing a seatbelt can only be classed as a moron.

Iv had a seatbelt save my life when I was younger. By the way, whoever says over 35 makes no difference, try being slammed into from behind by a 70mph car, when your doing 10mph....... I hope you have a seatbelt on if you ever have the misfortune to be in such/any accident

Lol iv got 2 parking spaces, so when I want to wash the car, I usually move it to the space closer to the hose lol, or when I have guests over, I let them park in the easy space, as opposed to the one below my apartement which is a b*tch to reverse into. Only a matter of maybe 20 metres, but still feels weird not wearing my seatbelt. Putting my belt on is like an instinct.

                    Ahhh, got it now, lol,

Yeah I'm the same, can't start moving the car without the belt on, just feels so weird without it. In fact, I accidentally put my belt on this morning when just moving the car out of the garage, doh!
