I,ve had a Voltmeter on mine whilst running aand as soon as you put the sidelights on the alternator fires up same with any load on the alternator, wouldn't leave RHS on too long may burn out an element.

Been there done that, my PSI unit shows 12.6v on normal running and 14.4v on load. I usually run with the fan on 1.

Trickle charger twenty quid shorted.
