Been in a similar situation recently. I know how painful it is from losing dogs in the past so my thoughts are with you.

I've got a beautiful 4 1/2yr old Rottie who has just developed hip displacesure (sp?) and has been struggling for a while. Vet put him on a diet (he weighed 65kg's!) and some special food but he deteriorated very very quickly. Had a Rottie who suffered with this previously and ended up with kidney failure.

Took Thunder (the rottie) to the vets last week convinced I'd be told he'd have to be put to sleep....was dreading it and the minute I walked into the vets room with Thunder I burst into tears! I was heartbroken before it had even been confirmed it was going to happen!!

Fortunately for me, there was one last thing to try and he's responding really well - back to his old self and still giving lots of love to us all!! I walked out of the vets and felt like I was floating on air! I know the day is coming where I'll have to make the dreaded journey and the minute he's suffering, I'll try and be unselfish and do what's right for him. Even though it'll be damn hard.

That's what I think you can always comfort yourself with...you looked after Molly so well, gave her a fabulous life and when the difficult decision had to be made, did what was right for her and not what was right for you.

Be proud that you are/were a loving responsible dog owner!

His is transient (though potent), plus the vet wasnt having any of it, even when he dressed up as a massive Squirrel.

Have to say, all your replies have really helped ** Thanks !! **, I have been going over and over it, even being not the most sentimental person and its still hard, I dont know how you absolute lovers of things furry manage. I am having a beer which is a bit dangerous as I tend to get emotional, we have let the kids have free reign to go or not to go to Cubs, go on the Xbox/PC etc, I am surprised how much my eldest was upset, he came home having obviously bottled it up all day and started sobbing, that set the wife off, the main complaint being a kid at school that had been laughing about it, little spoilt, ignored rich **** out to have a go at the vulnerable, he has been given permission to snot him one at some point, this kid has made a point of victimising other kids and today he saw a bit of a target in my lad as he was obviously holding back, so, dont get mad, get even, what I tell my lads is different to what I tell the missus.........

Ritchie, glad your dog is responding, I can rationalise putting an old dog to sleep but not a young one, I am not the worlds biggest animal lover but thats just wrong, its not the way of things, ok, as a Dog you dont get that long but then again you get (in an ideal world) 2 meals a day plus treats, fussed and loved for ten years plus, 4 is no age, its a bit like that no parent should outlive their children.

I know Rotties get a bad press but like powerful cars and fast bikes they have their responsible owners, its when they get into the wrong hands the problems occur.

They do get a bad press but you are so right - mine is as daft as a brush but I don't leave him alone with anyone - for his protection too!

He is young - I remember the day we picked him up, blooming hot august day and he went and laid under the plants in the garden to get some shade!!

Unfortunately, a rotties average life span is only 8 years old. Mine is deemed to be a 'giant' dog ( if he stands on his back legs he's about 5' 8") and still weighs 55kgs. Apparently as a 'giant' his expected life span is only 7 yrs.

Dreading it...just dreading it. Hubby has a daughter but I have no kids - he is my baby and well it's just heartbreaking.
