Never been my thing but my circle of close friends are or have experienced drugs in one form or another (usually recreational i.e clubs, lads night etc).
I know a chap though who has probably taken it a bit too far, not a close mate, more of an old work colleague. He was a weekend warrior but a few of us started noticing he started doing things during the week but I don't know if its a problem for him or not.
I think in his situation it doesn't help to work in a company were the boss and quite few other people go on mad bender holidays and have parties where cocaine and other stuff gets passed around.

So all you occasional use is OK guys give yourself the "daughter test".
Your 17 year old is going out to a big college party. She says to you "Dad I think there will be some stuff around, is it OK to try something?"
So what do you say? dl

think i must be the only person on here thats never...
tried a cigarette/cigar/tobacco of any sort
tried any illegal drug of any sort
didnt try booze until i was gone 16 at college
but i was raised in a very militant/fearful household with a soft mum but a stern (and abusive) step father.
i have a few friends that occasionally smoke weed etc, and have been present when two have taken pills on a night out. admittedly i was once tempted to try 1/2 a pill but i bottled it and theoretically respect myself more so for resisting.

That was a stupid question, so expect stupid answers.

my own (very honest) opinion
i love drugs i think they are great ..
when my mates are all falling about all over the place slurred speech etc , i am 30,000 feet and rising 1 or 2 nights a month ..
i went through a bit of a cocaine faze lately but to be straight its highly over rated , i prefer the old amphetamines , i took my 1st ecstacy last week in 3 years and my god was it a "dunter" it was a smurf and it sent me to button moon , I have this Friday off work so heres my friday night checklist .
1.half quarter of the finest amphetamine sulphate (£20)
2.5 smurf esctasy tablets (£20)
3. 40 menthol **** (9.00)
£49.00 and i can 101% guarantee myself (and a mate) a ****ing good friday night rolling into saturday daytime , if we were both to go out on the **** i guarantee we would easy hammer £40 each on drink , and act like fanny's probrably end up scrapping and generaly acting like tossers ..

i should also put in here ... for 12 years + i was a very heavy smoker of cannabis and marijuana , i smoked 60 - 80 quids worth a week , if i wasnt at work i would be at home smoking herb ,
Now i must say (and i feel real strongly about this ) the odd smoke is nothing bad (although i dont do it these days) hash/marijuana etc is very very very addictive and i dont care how many scientific reports are out to say its not , if i didnt get my Friday ounce i would be a very very unhappy man indeed , an absolute tnuc to live with !! whereas i was probrably addicted to the tobbaco in joints as i never used to smoke **** , i started smoking **** the day i gave up the herb ....
and when i was younger and we took a "mega" mushroom brew i saw green and blue in the sky with lots of different variations of the colours in between wich doesnt sound so strange except for the fact im colour blind between the 2 colours.... cocaine i find highly highly over rated !!
right anyway thats my story over , sorry to bore you guys just thought id let you know my thoughts ...

I've never even been tempted to get into drugs - ok had the odd toke on a spliff at parties, but that's it - plenty of chances for e's, coke etc - but it just doesn't interest me at all.
One of the main things is that there's no regulation (obviously with them being illegal!), so what the hell are you taking exactly? You don't know.
It's like some pikey coming up to you on the street saying "oi mate, wanna buy this half eaten McDonalds cheeseburger? Ate half yesterday, but dont want the rest" and you buying it and eating it.

Whats more realistic is your daughter is likely to go to parties where they will be drugs. I'm obvioulsly not going to tell her to go and take drugs but i do understand that she may try drugs, which is here choice and i can do nothing about.

Would you class Alcohol in the same bracket because I have seen the results of people who have done mad bender weekends and how it progresses to drinking at lunch, during the week etc.
Alcohol is also the cause for many a fatal accidents yet it's not classed as a drug because it's deemed legal and a revenue earner.
I used to drink a long time ago but it was when I was out at clubs etc, only really liked my Jack Daniels but I started drinking more e.g when round a mates house, at the weekend down the pub and it played havoc on my emotions and personality.
I know some really cool people who are complete dicks when they are drunk, you can't say alcohol is not a drug when it has that much of an effect on a person and essentially your drinking to get high just as you smoke to get high, all the same to me.

Its not reasonable because its not realistic.

I am sure my girl hasn't tried anything more than a joint but I even doubt that. My boy is in the Rock Music business so he is more susceptible I guess but does talk to me in a pretty laid back way about what is on offer and who is doing what. dl

FFS it was pretty clear what was behind my question and your answer, as a hypothetical father, is to say that you can do nothing about it. You can influence her choice - yes even at 17 - by having a discussion and gently prodding away with some facts. Such a discussion could be along the lines of "If you try coke I'll be very disappointed with you. If you have a spliff then don't drive home and I won't tell your mother" But all that will depend on your relationship with your daughter/son. You can also influence which circle of friends she hangs out with. That fine balance between influence and freedom

End of the day you have no idea what your children get up to and you certainly can't influence there choices. My mother is a strict catholic and is so anti drugs you wouldn't believe. Myself and friends are living proof kids will do as they will do as they please.

And that's your contribution to society is it? Bringing up kids and admitting that you, as a parent, have no control or influence over them. Shame for the kids really. dl

yep i have and still do sometimes, dont really agree with the " drug taking escalates " i have a large group of friends and there is only one person i know that got silly and went onto the really hard stuff. as for it doesnt do any harm, i dont agree with that either i think it does do some harm in the long run i.e possible dementia and other related problems

You're the one talking crap here DL.
So all you occasional use is OK guys give yourself the "daughter test".
I don't see what this has to do with me taking drugs. What you want for yourself and your children are different.

I have had friends& colleagues who habitually smoke weed, or take pills etc and they seemed to find it something to brag about - at the end of the day, it's their life they are messing with, and if they are willing to take the risk then so be it.... I don't have any sympathy for anyone who wrecks their life in this way.

You're not the only one C-O'B... I have never been the remotest bit interested in any sort of tobacco or drug. Some people may say that I haven't lived, and that I must be a goody-two-shoes ( yes someone has said that to me before!), but it's my life, and just as it is their decision to smoke, snort a few lines or pop a few pills, it is my decision not to, and I can go out and have fun without any of those props.
