The most important thing in ANYONES game is the grip, it's the only part that actually touches the club and controls the face! Interlocking or overlapping makes NO difference, it's what your comfy with

Best way to learn is to start on the putting green and working your way back through the bag to a driver. This could take a few months but it's the best way! Most important thing is not to get ahead of yourself and stick with the basics for now (grip, stance and posture) and you wont go far wrong

My advice is to practice your short game A LOT!

Be honest and tell him its easier to hit the ball straight if you hit it as hard as you can.......

take advice from this bloke^^^^ he might face the wrong way when he hits the ball but he's handed out some very good tips and info on threads i've had up

on the grip thing, i used to play with a guy that had uses a left hand below right hand grip (he's right handed by the way) some people use this for putting. he uses this for every club and yep, it looks as odd as it sounds! has never worn a glove either. his handicap? 4. for about 10 years and you would NEVER play him for money

my point is there's a big difference between a bad habit and something that works for you and you can trust (jim furyk a good example) our club pro has never tried to alter this guys grip. it works, he's happy so leaves it be.

i've played golf for years and still enjoy it but it can be a head **** if you're not carefull! when my dad was teaching me he said to me that it can be the most rewarding and frustrating game all in the space of 4 hours! he's not wrong.

my dad uses it aswell, i can't get on with it myself and i have the 'bad' habit of having my index finger down the grip, but sod it, it works for me!
putting is about the most individual part of golf IMHO, i don't think i've seen 2 club golfers ever putt the same!

Hoskib, thanks for your kind words, i try my best There's a guy at our club who grips it the wrong way but he's not the best, for some reason he has a wicked slice Like you say it's horses for courses and if it works then dont change it! Jim Furyk for example, he had to choose one of two major collages to go to. Him and his dad went to see both head coaches and one of them said how he would break his swing down and re-build it, to which his dad said not a chance! He said thats how he swings the club and it wont change, he went to the other collage and never looked back!

To an extent it doesnt matter how you swing the club as long as you deliver the club face square at impact. Rythm and tempo are key factors too, or is that for another activity

When we went over to the States my Crew and I always used to have a day on the USAF base golf courses-they all have one I reckon. It was the best laugh ever as long as you did not take it seriously. One of my navigators who was experienced at it used to be beatable because he could not stop laughing. I once accidentally got hold of a ball properly and it hit a car's windscreen on the main road. All the traffic was stopped so I went and hid behind a tree until they all went away again!

in my defence i was still horribly pissed and just wanted to get back to the buggy
great holiday though, just found a few old pics the course was LaCala and was a cracker if do get the bug matt, get out to spain or portugal, a different class of golf course

and that shaft was a very stiff IIRC! lol, if you can't laugh at yourself you're fooked really aren't you

lets just say i invented a new form of huge push into massive slice on that tee! luckily it's a pretty big dogleg and i wasn't aiming straight gold star is all i can afford with the amount of ProV's i've been losing recently

Well had my lesson, really enjoyed it so booked a few more. Bloody hard work though, thankfully on the course there is a walk between shots!

oh yeah, plenty of time for a breather what with all that ball searching

if/when you get to the point of buying clubs have a look at golfbidder or ebay. some great 2nd hand offers
if you fancy splashing out, american golf etc are well priced. or if you've got a local course give that a go as they all do their best to match prices and custom fitting is a good thing to go for aswell

don't grip the club too tightly but don't make your grip so loose that the club 'turns' in your hands.

head down and eyes on the ball - look up only when your follow-through is complete. even with putting.

a little tip to help line up your feet: when taking your stance, hold your club in both hands parallel to the ground, lined up with the tips of your feet. now look where the end of the club is pointing - if the club isn't pointing towards the pin or aiming point (eg on a dog-leg), adjust your stance till it does. thus your body will be correctly lined up. makes a big difference to where the ball goes!
