Morning/Afternoon,
Ok, is there still a CD/DVD in the internal CD/DVD drive? if so take it out.
Power the machine off. Make sure the external dvd drive is not plugged in. Make sure internal hard drive and CD/DVD drive are attached to IDE and things are jumpered correctly.
Reset the PMU/Cuda, have a look [url=http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86760]here for info on how to do it and where the button is on the motherboard (usually near the PRAM Battery)
Wait 10 seconds, then power on the machine, and zap the PRAM twice (just keep command, option, P and R held down until you hear the restart chime three times - once for initial start, then two for the two zaps)
See if it then boots from the hard drive.

Thanks Markus. I think the hard drive is dead (heard it go clunk when switching it on trying to get the 2nd drive to work) as can't hear it spin up so have taken it out and replaced it with the 27gb one which is formatted to fat32 and does spin up.
Doesn't matter what I do with holding down the 'c' key or option etc it will not do anything but boot up to the flashing folder and ?
Any ideas?
Have pulled the cd casing flap down so can see the cd drive light and it does flash whilst holding the c key down so may be the discs I have are damaged and can't boot from them, they read fine from within the OS though.

If the disks mount on the desktop then it's possible they are not bootable. Are they actual Apple disks, as in Apple logo and stuff on them, or are they copies? I could see if they are copies how they might not be bootable.
The icons you are seeing are say there is no System Folder on any attached device, in other words, it's found nothing it can boot from.

Yes they are both Apple CD's, one is 8.5 and the G3 restore cd and the other is 9.2.1 and both say hold down c to boot from them on the cd. Can't understand why they wont boot when they read fine from within the OS.
Tried the other boot from cd key combos which I googled and they didn't work either.

It's being a complete bastid then
Have you disconnected the external dvd drive and also the internal hard drive, so the only device attached is the internal cd drive? if not, give it a shot and pop in one of the CD's then try holding down the C key. Actually, try restarting the machine, not holding down the C key and just popping the CD in the drive and seeing if it boots. It might do so as there are no other drives on the system.
Only other key combo I can think of is command + option + shift + delete (backspace key), but I'm fairly sure that won't work on G3's

Thanks once again and yep tested all that stuff and it didn't work. The light on the cd drive comes on just as the flashing folder comes up so its looking for the cd drive to give it bootable media, it spins and then stops.
May have to take my dvd/cd writer out of my pc and take it to work to try as everything at work is now SATA

OK trying another g3 that had its ram and hdd taken out. Got this one to boot to cd but it wont see the hdd. Its a hdd out of a pc which has been wiped and formatted to fat32.
When booted upto the cd I go to utilities folder and disk first aid but it only sees the cd rom. Is there something that needs to be done to a hdd out of a pc that is empty/formatted to fat32 before a mac will see it?
Changed the jumper on the disk from slave to primary and it then showed up
