What is the complete nightmare you refer to, if you mean the economic downturn then yes it's likely to be painful for a while.
As for the conservatives having to fix the nightmare, well there's unlikely to be a general election for 2 years, so by then we should be out the other side of it (bloody hope so anyway).
You forget (conveniently I suspect) the 'nightmare' in our public services the Labour government inherited from the Tories in 97, and a pretty good economic record for 10 years, which is at least worth a mention surely?

So, like Kieran, I am also concerned that when the Conservatives are elected in 2010 we will be in a position where there are no easy choices; and the harsh choices required to shore up the economy may result in us succumbing to Labour again sooner than sanity should permit.

I'm not being at all selective as I would NEVER of voted for a socialist government in the 1970's (if I was old enough), I was delighted that Thatcher took the unions down, so I don't understand your first comments, unless you are assuming too much about my political inclinations?

How could they promise tax cuts? By selling our gold reserves perhaps?
Oh dear, been done already. Pilfered along with the pension pot. We could touch China up for a loan. Damn it, already in hoc to them for a shedload as well.
But public services are wonderful aren't they? How exactly?
Nobody with any money would chance going into an NHS hospital if they could go private in case some bug knocks them off.
Claims of improved education are patently hogwash. I've never come across so many illiterate, poorly behaved, poorly spoken numbskulls as our schools seem to churn out now. I expect they'll all become glamour models, footballers or celebs and it'll all come good in the end, don't you?
The trains are overpriced and overcrowded.
The GPs have had massive pay rises, the government stipulated they must work less hours for this, certainly a tough decision for the GPs at the negotiating table. So we are now paying eastern European doctors to cover out of hours at large cost. Very clever, pat on the back for that one.
New rules for dental practice mean NHS dentistry is such a target driven pain in the butt few can be bothered and thousands are without a dentist.

Because it certainly rankles me that right now I pay into this system and take nothing out, whilst too many people younger than me are already leeching from the system, and when (if ever) I reach retirement age there will be nothing in the pot because those useless tossers will still be leeching the system along with their braindead offspring. This government have succeeded in creating a society where not working is a career choice.

The difference between sky and bbc is down to the council in Durham where bbc figures are not showing a previous count and therefore any councillors there are shown as pos gais for labour not the net losses they really are.
200 was the worst case scenario of all the pundits and it has been more than twice as bad as that. Cant say I am surprised as GB's latest tactic is to try and lay low to stop being noticed as the incompetent twit that sold the country off on all counts that he really is.

I'm not spinning Paul, I'm just saying that mid terms are traditionally a loser for encumberant governments. Like I say, in 2004, Labour got 26% of the vote, and then won the general election the following year. I can remember the Tories getting an absolute hammering in the 80's only to win in '87 with a landslide.
Of course when you have a sihft such as we saw last night, it indicates people are voting on naitonal issues as well as local ones - And if the Tories carry on with the current wave they could win a GE. But, all I am saying is that it is not unusual for Governments to take a hammering in locals and then win a GE.

Public services are so much better than they were in the 80's/90's it's unbeleivable. They were capped so low under the Tories that they fell into almost oblivion. What was needed was enourmous investment to get the back on track, and that;s what we got. Thankfully, the Tories, as it stands most likely the next government, are comimted to the same levels of public spending. (they wouldn't be getting my vote if they weren't)

I'll probably vote Tory, in the next GE because I think it's time for a change. But a lot of the points you make simply aren't true and are based on supposition and heresay.

You are correct pete, but that does rely on the government at the time being competent enough to listen, act and win back the trust that they have abused so freely for the last 11 years. It aint gonna happen with Mr Brown the guy cant make decisions for toffee and has ran out of ideas (if he ever had any to start with).
i find it quite sad really that someone that has wanted to be PM for well over a decade, if not longer, is coming to the conclusion that he is actually rubbish at it.

When a polticial party tries to appeal to people, it does so to those people that can be swayed - It is thier desires that are met. Not those of the lifetime tory/labour voters that will never vote for anyone else.
It is the floating voters that have the casting vote.

I dont think that the Tories have quite got the message right 100% yet nor the policies but then I feel they are keeping the real policies pretty close to their chests at the moment as the last time they announced some good stuff, GB nicked it.
i have a feeling that GB will string it out to the last possible moment now because he wont be able to make his mind up about when to call the GE.
My only hope is that whoever gets into power next does the job properly.
I was prepared to give Tony B'liar' the benefit of the doubt to start with but he well and truly shot himself in the foot. GB looks like an alien with his floppy jawed breathing in between his mumbled monotone sentences and does nothing to make me think that his best option isnt to call it a day like Kevin Keegan did as England Manager and still retain some dignity.

The Tories bottled it at the last moment in 2001 and 2005. They had the opportunity of modernising (and had Portillo gotten the leadership they would have done) but unstead the fell back on the same tired old polcies. They went on and on about Europe and immigration and got absolute reamed.
I think you will find a very different approach come the 2010 election.
Of course what has fallen stright in to the Tories lap is the one big ace that Labour had, the Economy, is going **** up.

You can only hide the cr@p under the carpet for so long before people noticing the unsightly lump that is there. The economy was always heading for trouble the moment GB took charge of it. So many of the issues now such as the dispute over pensions up at the refinery are as a direct result of Gordon Brown's actions early in his Chancellor role such as raiding the pension pots for tax in the case of the refinery.

What amazes me is, how the hell some areas are still strong Labour. I live in the NE and I see Gateshead and Sunderland are stil Labour. Why FGS. Is it down to the old cloth cap brigade who can't see the wood for the trees. I despair
