when a car has had a new engine, that put me off straight away, call that weird, but if a car has needed a new engine or a complete engine/gearbox rebuild id be thinking, proper ramped to *****,not saying this car was,but thats my assumption in general, not just scoob related, why does a car need a new engine/gearbox with only 100k - 140k on the clock ?!?!?

not refering to this car in particular, just my overall buying

good luck budsky....

see exactly what your saying. when i bought the car 18 months ago, i asked this question first. the seller was as honest as he could be. the rebuild was when the turbo/oil pump had failed. got all the reciepts for the work done (under warranty may i add) and even the diagnosis notes too. also noticed looking in the stamp service book, it was owned as a company car for her first few years, inc in 2002 when the rebuild was required.

basically if i had have seen the car had a rebuild with little explanation, i would have walked away. but seeing the circumstances and the fact it was warranty replaced, and all the history with it, even the condition for a car with high bodywork miles, it wasnt really a hard decision to make, and i bought her within the hour.

also to add, if i did sell (which im still trying to convince myself not too), the car is well known on here and any issues ive had documented, so to a prospective buyer, this has to be a massive plus, especially a scoobynet member. in a reverse situation, if i was buying another scoob, id personally want a forum member owned one as generally theyre looked after buy genuine enthusiasts.

I disagree, knowing what i know now I'd only buy a classic with a knacked engine or one with a recent 'reputable' rebuild, as imho an EJ20 is & should be treated as a consumable, especially as they near 80-100K mark

Yeah I would rather buy a higher mileage one that had had rebuilt motor and box than a low mileage one that hasn't had many parts replaced. Odds are it will need the at some point.
Things can do brake and more often on a performance cars

this is what i was thinking to be honest. lots of my98-99 cars about for say £3000-3500, but with between 90-120,000miles on the clock without major work. not saying that its guaranteed to blow etc, but mine is safe in the knowledge that the engine is strong and less than 6 years old, the gearbox is under 4 months old, suspension less than 9 months old etc. obviously some joe blogg on the street may not know the difference, but if i did need to sell, hopefully member on here/other scooby forum would see this as a good investment. safe to say the car could clock upto 200,000 miles safely now.

money wise if i had it id have modded her to 300/300 by now too.

it is scary how the market is at the mo

i am never going to see any of the money i've poured (and continuing to) into my car back, there are too many around is the bottom line

and with the tax changes people are put off even more, god knows what i'm going to do with it in a year's time...........

ok then, say 4 grand... give me 4-4500 grand and i'll supply a ver 3 sti or 3-3500 and i'll supply a ver 2 sti ... now what would it be ? exactly.. not kicking the car mate but its a high mile uk turbo.. buyers still want bragging rights..."ive got a ver 3 sti " etc etc. and to be perfectly honest, i would take 4k and get an older sti fresh from the boat.. i know you have a god car and that you have spent a load of miney on it but buyers dont care about your loss...honestly, they dont.

fair point, but some people dont necessarily want an sti, an ageing one at that. v2 95-96? v396-97?

to add the necessary remap for uk fuel, probable lack of history etc. and some younger scoob drivers simply cant afford the insurance. id like to think my car and lots of other uk turbos have everything all ready to go, ie no map required, all history present. owner history known is important to people to.

i didnt realise your an importer but i can see where you got your low valuation from. if indeed what you do say is true, and the car is worth under £3k (however much i disagree) its not worth selling at all to be honest.

seems all these cheap early wrx's and sti's being shipped over is crushing the uk market perhaps.

theres no way i would put this car up for less than £3500-3750, and if i did and it didnt sell, so be it, id find the money from elsewhere.
