No, you'd get a ticket and then be invited to provide your insurance documents in court on contesting the ticket, as would be your right.

Or, as I do, I would call your insurance company at the roadside and check personally. Easy There's also another system to check that isn't a police database that covers more than the police database does.

David's insurance, your insurance and mine all say the same about driving other cars. It provides 3rd party liability only. Liability isn't compliance with the law unfortunately.

I do carry my insurance documents in the car for that very reason

I dont know why my car isnt in the database, the last time I got stopped I didnt actually have my documents with me, the officers told me about not being in the database, they asked who I was insured with, they didnt give me a producer, they just asked if I had my picture license as that would suffice

TBH I think they were more interested in my scoob than how I was driving or whether I had the relevant docs

Probably mate.

I got pulled the other week in Leeds and my car (just got it) wasn't on the database. They went to town on me, checking everything!!!

I just called Elephant.co.uk, passed them over to the guy and it was sorted in seconds.

You can tell in seconds normally if the person's not covered just by the car and their demeanor. No tax often goves it away too

Yes, liability for paying out is not the same as being insured for the road.

Liability from an insurer will not save you getting your motor taken away and crushed if caught.

bizarre so you are insured and yet the police in their infinite wisdom class the car as uninsured even if you are covered for it. I have trouble believeing any jobsworth would stand up in court and argue that even though the driver was insured the car wasn't

I checked the fine print a while back with my insurers at the time and this is what got sent back.
its interesting as I also have a fleet policy that covers any vehicle we have been lent, leased or hired

Dear Mr ****,

Thank you for your email dated 18/04/05.

We will cover you to drive other cars as long as:

Your current Certificate of Motor Insurance says so
The other car is not owned by you, a rental car, not hired to you under a hire purchase or leasing agreement.
You have the owner's permission to drive the car
You are not covered by any other insurance to drive it.
You still have your car, and it has not been damaged beyond repair, stolen nor sold.

If you have any further queries please can you email me at customerservices@admiral.com

Please can you include your date of birth, postcode and policy number in all emails you send to us at Admiral Insurance.

Yours sincerely,

Karen Brennan

Yes, bizarre.

It's all down to vehicles being on the road under the RTA. The onus is on the driver to make sure the law is complied with, hence the confusion.

Not true it is perfectly possible to get insurance that covers you for any car you get into wether it has its own policy or not. As a Policeman you should know the law better than this.

Don't be pedantic. Traders' policies are a different matter, and not the issue here.

For the purposes of 'normal' cars and driving, all vehicles have to have a policy covering it to be on a public road.

Fleet vehicles etc. are a different story as are specialist policies.

so why do specialist policies differ, they don't insure the car just the driver in that car which is exactly what you're saying you would ticket people for. Surely the offence is driving without insurance. Which you have even if you have third party only cover which is the bare minimum UK requirement. half the point of having the entitlement is so if needed you can drive another car. The insurers don't stipulate its insured so you're not invalidating cover, I'd be kicking off at anyone who would listen for getting done for driving with no insurance as the car wasn't covered even though i was
