Ive been told by several experienced sources that the classic scoob big ends can go at anytime(due to one of journal's working itself loose,causing oil starvation resulting in bent crank amongst other things). Mine let go rolling along at 60mph,so it might be that he wasn't ragging the **** of it on a european dash, it could have just been very unlucky timing. Unfortunately it is the chance you take with buying a used car, especialy a high performance one

cheers guys, Its all fair coment really, well it was his first performance car he has had, cos he said he had a brand new ford ka lol, and never owned something like the impreza before, i did say take it easy with her and put in at least 97 ron fuel as it will damage her, he seemed like a bull shi**ing to**er saying he was going to buy a brand new scoob or an evo 9 but he'd always wanted a scoob like mine?? there is a bit of price difference there between the two, 2700 to like 30,000. when i was showing him to work the cd player just before he left he did say that he would be going to fast to hear it !!!.

Did you specifically tell him to run it on high octane fuel ?

I saw this some years ago, friend of mine sold his 98 impreza to a dude, dude drives down to the petrol station and fills it up with 92 RON *lol*

when the dude drove it home at sustained high speed, the engine let go...

sad case, ofcourse he was on the phone right after yelling he (freind) knew the engine was going and he had been conned into buying it,, police threats etc etc blah blah..

You are safe from small claims actions other than the nuisance of having to deal with it. After all it is/was a private sale and there is no comeback to you in a legal sense.

What you do need to look out for, is this horrible little individual coming to your place when he next gets UK leave.

I think that I'd like to try to find out his regiment and make some contact there and let them know how he is behaving. That may not be as easy to do as say. But a bit of effort might pay dividends. Maybe the Police can help with that. Especially as you will have brought to their attention the apparently nasty emails that he has threatened you with.

Yep, essentially in a private sale, unless it can be proved that you knowingly misrepresented the car, you've nowt to fear from litigation; the law is on the side of the seller when it comes to private "sold as seen" sales.

Would suggest you folllow David's advice when it comes to ensuring this individual does not seek any retribution though! Better safe than sorry!

In response I just bought a scooby privately and after driving 60 miles the number 4 piston lost all compression and left me on the side of the road spluttering with oil leaking everywhere, I was not a happy chap either as its going to cost me £1300 to fix and I only paid £3000 for the car as it a 1996 model. But when I left the seller the car seemed great and drove well with plenty of power. I did at the time of the car blowing give it a quick blast as all new scooby owners do im sure thats half the pleasure. But i will take the hit on the chin, as there was no garuntee when I bought the car. It is not your responsibility as the seller. I also feel sorry for the bloke who bought it, as its happened to me, but sadly thats life. As long as you 100% genuinly felt the car was in perfect running order with no faults prior to selling it, id go to the police if he keeps harrasing you, especially if you feel threatened. best of luck hope this helps
