Carry a mobile phone at all times, lock your doors if the caars security doesn't do that for you and invest in a crook lock or a maglite torch, all ideal for arming yourself with, and if pulled over by plod they will not question you about either of them.

It's so sad things are getting like this, the only hope you've got is if the car jackers drive away at 31 in a 30 zone and get pulled over.

If I was out in my Scooby on my own and a hijacking situation arose I dunno but I think I would have to now consider that it is only a car and therefore here have the keys.. ring Police asap etc.. and try and get good descriptions.. especially with all the recent stories etc.. considering a home made antihijack system currently.. car stop up the road etc..

If I was out with my family in the car that would be different..
With my wife and 1year old daughter in the car the situation changes.. for a start if they pulled me out etc.. they'd either be driving off with my daughter strapped in the car seat or expect us to remove her etc.. difficult, drive off with her in the car and I'd be hijacking the next car and taking chase.. difficult when I'd probably hijack a mondeo
I think if my family was at any risk then I would use anything in my reach and my Karate knowledge and training.. I'd risk going down for assult or worse to protect my family. Although if there was less risk and we were all out then again I think I'd let them take the car..
I am not going to be much use to the family if I am in prison, killed, or in hospital and then I cannot continue to protect them.
This is not the way I would like to deal with the situation as I would rather beat the living daylight out of them, but you never know what they are carrying, if they are mad enough to try and hijack a car they are not going to think twice about carrying a gun or a knife. Also I am bound to get made an example of if I beat up 4 guys trying to nick my car.. especially if I lose my rag...
At the end of the day it is only a car and your life and quality of life is at risk.. but we also don't want to give in to these scumbags...
Other thing to consider is that of you pull a knife you are straight away upping the heat in the situation.. take the keys and walk off locking the car on the alarm and you are only faced (hopefully) with punches and kicks..
If you pull a knife, makes sure you know how to use it.. otherwise you are just handing tham something to injure you with.

A quick question for you all.
Why not carry your immobiliser key fob on a different keyring to your car keys. Then if someone wants your keys, you can hand them over and then after they've got in, bang, on with the immobiliser while you call the police on your mobile.

My immobiliser switches itself on once the engine is off... so you couldn't switch it on manually when the engine is running without modification (idea?! )

Karate etc isnt really much use against 2 burly guys armed or not. I personally carry one of those telescopic metal police batons I bought in america for the very such eventuality - I keep it in the door pocket and is in easy reach, very small and easy to conceal but looks menacing when fully extended. I used to carry a blank firer Beretta 92F pistol in the glove box but could be more trouble than its worth with the cops etc (now its kept right next to my bed in case I get a break in). Perhaps some of the cops on this forum (danbo etc) could comment on us being caught in position of various self defence weapons? Golf clubs are good but a bit hard to get to if in the boot.

The thing is, I would probably get in more trouble for having that weapon than a crim driving around without a licence, no insurance and in a stolen car - a sad state of affairs.

When my last car was broken into and the ICE nicked I actually got it all back in my car and then made a point of leaving the car out of the garage and camping out back with my air rifle (these aint toys and can easily kill). Unfortunately the ****ers werent brave enough to show up again (probably a good thing otherwise I could be serving time now).

You must have experianced the wrong karate clubs then..
we often fight 3 or more onto one.. this has probably only brought me up to the standard to hold my own.. but annoyed I am not going to hessitate in using the techniques you cannot use during the lessons... this is not sport karate, but full contact, no mats etc..
Also always remember to say sorry after every hit... all witnesses will say in court that you kept saying sorry

Carrying a pistol loaded or not is asking for a prison sentence.

JGM - I dont doubt your martial arts expertise but at the end of the day its only a sport and your not 'potentially' fighting for your life (or those of your nearest and dearest). Against one average yob a couple of punches or similar would make him scarper pretty sharpish. But when we are talking about hardened car crims whose living is made from stealing motors - you can be assured they will be ready to fight you for it and they will be armed with some form of weapon.

You fighting several colleagues at the local dojo or whatever bears no comparison to you being faced by 3 armed yobs. The adrenalin will be pumping, you wont be thinking clearly and they wont hesitate in harming you. Look at special forces etc - when they go in for hand to hand combat they dont bother that much with martial arts as a real world fight comes down to eye gouging, biting, pulling hair etc - basically anything to prolong your life.

As for martial arts knowledge - well I used to do Tae-kwan-doe and my instructor was 7th dan black belt (in HK) and 3 student black belts could overpower him if they attacked at the same time.

I think the best deterrent is not to travel on your own. Car thieves are less likely to try hijacking a car thats full when they can hijack one with only one person in it!

If I was car-jacked, and made to drive, then I'd drive like a lunatic and even consider crashing the car so that the b4stards go flying thru the windscreen.

At the end of the day, insurance will have us covered, and you would end up teaching the hijackers a good lesson! (provided they forget to wear their seat belts!)

A thread a while ago, explained how to use a 'pay as you go'mobile as an antitheft device. You left it on all the time with power from the car, it is hidden somewhere and has an output lead to operate stereo mute. This output can be used to turn something on or off or anything else you can think of. Then you can just phone your car and get the desired result whatever that may be.....

I have always wondered about a blow up doll or similar as a security device, leave it in the car and no one all vreak in because they think your sat in it.. have to be a realisic doll though

If you are car-jacked then start driving through red lights, and get flashed by speed cameras, basically draw as much attention to yourself in the hope that the police will spot you or someone will call the police.

A couple of handbrake turns and powerslides will draw attention - basically car-jacking should be seen as a licence to drive like Richard Burns!

Mind you, I drive like that anyway!

As for car alarms, read your alarm manual to see if it already supports auto door locking, mine, and autowatch something or other, does, and I will be turning this feature on when I get back to the uk. I instintivley lock the doors now anyway, but this will help when the ol noodle aint working too good!

I would have thought most car jackers would have wanted to get away from the scene of the crime as fast a possible. I would give it maximum attack, sideways, and hope that someone notices me before Mr. amoeba realises what I'm up to. 70 in a 30 ought to do it. and its called due duress so your licence should stay clean

I knew someone who was carjacked at knifepoint. This was in a big 'ol American car. He tramped it and pointed at a tree saying "throw the knife out the window or you'll be wearing that tree with me". I guess the 600+hp of that car and the quickly approaching tree caused the knife to go out the window in a hurry. He then proceeded to beat the guy to a pulp.

The cops just laughed and dragged the perp off to jail. This was in the USA and about 20 years ago. If you ever see the car chases down there you would appreciate the different attitude they tend to have.

On the carjacking issue. Your insurance can replace your car but if you get knifed, run over or otherwise injured spare body parts are harder to come by. Canada tends to be a little more peaceful than the US but in the States I'm more concerned about someone shooting me because I flashed them for going too slow in the fast lane.

Every cop here wears body armour and carries a 9mm. Carrying a gun in Canada will certainly land you in jail or prison. Pointing a gun at someone, even a fake is an offense the second that person has reason to believe it's real. Having a gun in hand in front of cops is a really quick way to end up dead.

As for martial arts, I guess it depends on the situation. Having studied Aikido for a few years I'm relatively confident I could deal with a single person should he grab or grab at me but in a remote location I'd be more happy to see take my car and leave me unhurt.

Conversley they may go full bore with whatever weapons they have to subdue you.
I suspect they would much prefer not to have to confront anybody that may be able to hurt them.
