You should try Pendine.
Seven miles of beach and the home of the Museum Of Speed remembering the world land speed records that were set there and featuring the famous 'Babs'...
Museum of Speed Pendine
You can stay yards from the beach in The Beach Hotel - where Parry Thomas, Malcolm Campbell and all the rest used to stay. It's great - full of memorabilia and pictures and the decor upstairs is more or less as it was then - complete with custom woven Babs pattern carpets!

I live in Pembrokeshire. Moved here from Oxford about 11 years ago and no intention of going back. I love it here.
Closer to A40/M4 but can be quite busy and a nightmare traffic wise during the high season:-
Tenby
Saundersfoot
Further west and a little more calmer:-
Broad Haven
New Gale
Not much in Broad Haven and New Gale but St Davids is close and you'll have all amenities in say Haverfordwest (where I live)
Lots to do. If the weather is a not up to beach fun theres a few attractions around - Oakwood, Folly Farm (daughters favorite) Scolton Manor.
Went to Rhyl a few years ago and hated it.
