At his age it is difficult to say whether he really knew that what he did was wrong. Only you will know that. If he does and it was a wilful act then he deserves a short sharp lesson which he won't want to experience again. If he did not realise it was wrong then you will have to explain it all and it won't be easy.

You know that you want to beat him. Id suggest a riding crop: you can really hurt him without fear of the heavy blows injuring him...

Back from swimming. His mum has taken him to the nearby manor house to see some cygnets. I took this snap just to show what he has been up to and have a special surprise for him in the garage for when he gets home!

Sorry I am missing the point

he does something wrong - even at 3 he would understand that

but he still gets to go swimming which he I assume he enjoys
and his mum has taken him to the nearby manor house to see some cygnets

It would seem that you are rewarding his actions ..... instead of punishing?

Any action taken should be within a very short period so that the consequence of what he has done is known?

Even at 3 should he not know that it is wrong to do this regardless? What would you have done if this had been in a public street and someone elses car if you had not been looking?

1) Let him know he's done "very" wrong immediately.
2) Let him know that both of you are displeased about it.
3) Both be there when the real punishment is handed out.

Though I disagree with smashing stuff up as it's a very negative act. I think you've mixed your messages by taking him swimming too.

Almost better now to deprive him of stuff. Tell him you've got to fix the car or it won't go and that means you have to sell his cars on Ebay.

Guys I needed your sage-like advice yesterday - you're a day too late!!
The swimming thing is a weekly 'lesson' and is quite important in a land which is mostly below sea level.

One of the boy's cars bit the dust this afternoon (one that he never plays with and that was as cheap as chips). He knows that 'Roary' and 'Lightning' will be next if he ever pulls such a stunt again. And that his mum and dad will be calling the police. He deffo didn't like that one. We're quite sure he now really does understand how serious this is.

Also He missed out on his regular weekly spotting trip to the station with his dad. Its a fun 3km cycle ride to get there and the German ICE trains go through the station at high speed and I have to say its bloody impressive to have one of them screaming past when you're only 2 metres away

This is the perp'. You can tell he's a Brit at heart, as he's got socks on under his sandals

The boy has has hopefully learned his lesson now and I'll call the lease company first thing Monday to get it sorted and put this episode in the past as fast as possible.

Suresh he is very cute Did he give you a reason as to why he did it?

I remember when I was a kid of about 7 or 8 and my parents had gone out for the day leaving me with my best mate and his family. In those days kids were allowed to play out all day and our folks wouldn't see us until tea time (we lived in a very quiet village) so me and my friend used to get up to all sorts of trouble - he was a bad influence on me

Anyway on this particular occasion we decided that we wanted to play with fire so went into my parent's garage where I knew they'd hidden some horrible souvenir Spanish matches. We found a load of paper and stuff and set about setting fire to it which was great fun. Unfortunately my parents came home early and caught us red handed It seems that we'd made our bonfire underneath the central heating oil tank

Obviously my parents were quite annoyed (bloody furious!) and sent me to bed without any tea having had the slipper. I have never been so upset in my whole life, it wasn't the slipper (I was fairly used to it ) but it was the being deprived of my tea and playing out with my friends that hurt. But more than anything it was the fact that I felt so stupid and was soooo upset that I thought my parents hated me and were going to send me to boarding school

Mind you after a few weeks I was up to my old tricks again

No Sal he can't / won't say why he did it. I think he was just bored with waiting whilst his dad sold a barbie. It was a 10yr old 57cm Weber which went for Eur 85 - which won't have been worth it of course if I have to cover any of the damage!

Based on your own escapades, I'll be sure to keep all matches and lighters in the house well out of his reach!

I think the solution to the problem is to keep a closer eye on the little one when he is near cars. If he takes a stone to your car again you can then administer appropriate guidance as to why stones and paintwork don't mix.

Punishment isn't the answer as he didn't exactly misbehave because he may not have been aware that he was doing wrong.
