I've just bought mine(2 months ago),it is a buyers market,I walked away from many b4 I bought mine.
Admittedly I drive 12 miles to and from work when I'm working, shifts so 4 on 4 off,but I don't intend buying another car.
I bought this to satisfy my urge for performance and I must admit I don't count the cost,as a previous posted said life's too short...enjoy

A 550 mile round trip to London and Surrey from Yorkshire at the weekend cost me around £130 in V power and Tesco 99 in the Scoob. Going to start using my 10 year old Fiesta more for similar trips as it will do will do around 300 miles on 30 litres of normal unleaded. Depreciation would make selling the Scoob pretty pointless unless I chopped it in for a 2nd hand oil burner, though with the price of diesel now its even less of an attractive option.

Lifes too short to allow fuel prices dictate the car you drive - if you enjoy driving that is.

Worrying about motoring costs is for those who see a car as a means to get from A to B ..... I've yet to meet an Impreza owner who thinks like that!

Fill the tank, start her up, drive the long way home ...... just for the hell of it!

The scooby's just the second weeekend car anyway, but this VED business pisses me right off... It's so unfair that a car that does less than 5k a year will be liable for 400 quid tax, what a joke. That's like 8p a mile, whereas my clio which does about 15000 miles per year has a road tax of 140 (which works out at 0.93 pence per mile).

Fuuuuuk that!

I'm not happy about the rising costs; especially as it's all propaganda to maintain a multi-million dollar industry - the experts can't agree whether the human race is responsible for the changing climate or it's just a natural cycle. Just this month the group of UN scientists responsible for this BS announced that the climate will now cool for the next decade or so.

Why should we have to pay for an uncertainty? Even if it was necessary, the government haven't got a clue how to penalise fairly - just because a car's smaller, doesn't mean it's more efficient.

Last week it was found that the Prius isn't any more efficient than an average car.

I didn't buy an Impreza, only just being able to afford one. Running costs were bound to go up - most things are a rip-off in this country (software is half the price in the US). The government try to hide rising costs by using the Consumer Price Index as a reference because it's closest to their target (but doesn't include housing costs like mortgages and insurance) but the Retail Price Index is twice that level.

I will not let them ruin my fun if it's not at the expense of others.

To be honest the whole economic situation/ VED rises/ petrol prices has just convinced me to hang on to my MY00.

It's fairly cheap to service at a specialist, minor service just cost £110 and it costs £185 to tax.

I just don't see the point in spend about £10k to upgrade to a newer car that's going to cost more to tax and isn't really going to give me anything new.

I wonder if anyone is thinking about swapping their Scoob for a warm-hatch? I have a real hankering for a Panda 100hp - bung in a nice set of seats and a really tasty stereo and you'll have a pretty cheap car to run that is good fun to drive for very little cash (in new car terms it is very little cash). Anyone like the sound of that?

nope not selling but i am buying a diesil for £350 as a daily grinder, 50+mpg plus pre 99 diesil will run easy on 50/50 veg oil

scooby is gonna be my play thing so isnt a problem really.

if i was to sell the scooby with the state of the 2nd hand market i could never cover the finance so i have to just keep it and run another car.

thing is how many other people are going to this? high fuel price to save the planet but just get a cheap runabout that does good mpg and keep the gas guzzler!!!! the green aim doesnt seem to work

I considered buying a Mini Cooper under an incentive scheme through my employer but was only offered £1350 for my 97 wagon Uk model. in the end I decided to cycle to work more save on petrol and give it large round the lanes on selected special occasions .At the end of the day you'd have to go some to get a car that offers as much performance and leaves you with smile when you get home .

Yep I did 6 months ago

Moved house and can now walk to work. Now pootling around weekends in a 4 yr old 330D M Sport.

Saving myself over £50 a month on a loan, I halved my insurance (£500 to approx £250 - so another £20 or so a month there), road tax would have been £400 and is now £170) and I picked one up with their 5 year service plan so I have another 2 services for free

Overall I reckon I'm better off by about £100 a month and that doesn't include the savings I get in fuel economy (granted that won't be a lot doing less than 5K a year).

I just didn't see the point in having an expensive to run/tax/insure 330 BHP car to use it at the weekends.

Must be getting old too as the BMW is a brilliant car, quick, refined, quiet and even sounds good for a tractor.

Avalyn.

Bit the bullet a while back and like others on here, just decided to keep the scoob and make it faster...
looks like i'll spend less time on the road (work wise) anyway, so was probably the best thing to do. (there is nothing better to get you going in the morning than firing up 300 brake of pure rumble!!!

that said, who knows what is round the corner....

hopefully things will look a bit brighter in the armpit of a country, but i wont hold my breath!!!

good luck all

I'm probably gonna repeat what most of you have typed.
I bought my scoob about 3 months ago. Only ever gets used during weekends to go shows and stuff as I travel into work during the week by train.

Lets be real here, theres no way you would get the proper value for your scooby the way the market currently is should you decide to sell it.
Peeps running to buy diesels IMO are heading for a big disappointment cos the diesel price is heavily on the increase.
As for the higher road taxes I'm happy as I have a classic and therefore do not need to pay the stupid hike given to us by our idiotic governement. If you worried bout that then sell ur newage and come join us classics.

Funny that. A while ago I was thinking about maybe a Suzuki Swift Sport.
Small, fun, and cheap.

OK. Did some sums this morning. Based on todays Petrol/Diesel prices.

05 STI PPP (average 22 mpg) V's Golf GT Sport 170 DSG (Average say 38mpg)

Going to work & back, based on 10,000 miles/year I'd save £958.
More if you take driving around (not to work & back) and it gets even better.

38mpg on tha Golf is conservative. Probably more like 45mpg+ driven sensibly.

Insurance, tyres, servicing etc.

Hmmm.

I'm considering buying a second cheap car as a daily workhorse. Will give it a couple months see where fuel prices go.

I'm more worried about road tax than fuel prices TBH, but don't plan on selling any time soon. If it gets too silly it will just become a track car and I will buy something cheap to run about in.

Cant afford a second car that is sensible.

Wont sell the Wagon to save money, dont have many luxuries in life and the car is my bit of fun. She is also my daily driver, general work horse and great at making me smile after a crappy day, which is becoming more common with this poxy country.

Im single, no family, smoke, drink, own a house and drive a performance car........... the country would be worse off without people like me paying stupid taxes and sponging nothing back in return.
