I only went to stroke it after asking the owner if it bites!!

He may look soft but he doesn't like babies, bicycles, children, cats, squirrels, the Irish fella next door, people in parked cars, dogs in parked cars, Boxers (dogs), small dogs, Staffie's, joggers, horses... the list goes on.
Had a good laugh when i read this as it sound just like my black lab. She hates postmen, policemen, window cleaners, paper boys, horses, grey hounds , collies, small dogs and hoodies. Other than that she is great.

If I told Woody to attck, he would probably just walk over to me and lick me or want stroking. If I don't say anything, he'll go nuts.

Pimmo your dog looks lovely and its nice to know she's a softie.
However as some one who cycles quite a lot, and some one who loves dogs too, I always have a problem knowing which dogs are friendly and which ones are not.
Owners seem split between those who say, dont worry she's a big softie, those who will hold onto their dogs and then the others who dont give a **** and you end up trying to either escape at top speed or fight the damn aggresive pooch off.

This Is my baby, Dyno a 6 month old bullmastiff. He is the gentelist dog ever, from having his injections we got him socialised straight away with other animals, cats, dogs and children and adults. Now he's getting bigger people see me walking him and run a mile. I wouldnt mind but when we see people I have him on a short lead and he walks to the opposite side right next to me.

Size comparison, I'm 6 foot 5 and 18 stone

Could do with my camera strapped permanantly around my neck, he comes out with some right looks but never have the camera ready.
We do have quite a few good experiences when out and about tho and meet some other friendly dog walkers, mainly owners of larger breeds like rotties and alsations etc who arent scared of the big softy. Even most families with young children ask if they can pet him etc.
The people who seem scared are normally older couples or owners of smaller dogs like jack russels etc.
At the end of the day tho any dog can be vicious if thats how the owner makes them or through cruel circumstances. I can understand in a way why people are more scared of the larger breeds as if one flips it would cause very serious if not fatal injuries due to the size and power alone but not to say a smaller breed couldn't be as viscious.

My comment on Staffies and Rottweilers was taken out of context ( or possibly deliberately misunderstood ? ) - my point is that not all owners of these dogs are bad, but a lot of the bad owners choose these dogs.

9 times out of 10 when you see some scabby tracksuited chav with loads of Argos 9ct gold, a bum fluff moustache and home made tattoos ( normally of various different girls names ) if they have something on the end of a lead it will be a Staffie or Rottweiler - the same people who used to have pit bulls when they were popular.

You dont see many chavs walking around with a Yorkshire Terrier, Old English Sheepdog or Chihuahua !

That's what I'm on about !!

You see people in cars pointing and smiling at her, cause she looks like a bear ... but out side people seems to think shes gonna attack them, regardless of a lead !!

Shes down stairs now crying .. she wants to go for a walk and I ignore her until she shuts up and lies down...

She doesn't seem to grasp that though

It sounds like a dominance issue to me. Clearly the dog sees you as too weak to defend 'the pack' and therefore steps in on your behalf. This is an attack waiting to happen IMO.

Maybe people are scared of your dog 'cause they think it's about to rip their face off?

I'm at work so I can't see what picture you posted up, but I'm imagining a bull terrier or Rottweiler. If so, then I'd be wary of it too!

You are of course, 100% correct. It's only an unpopular view if taken out of context or misunderstood: there is a big difference between saying that anyone who owns a Staffie is a Chav and that, they are popular with Chavs and the like!

Ns04 (Staffie owner for 20 years, since I was 11 and grew up with Dobermans)

NS04 I know staffies can be the most gentle dogs as with larger breeds its just the bad press they get unfortunately. Same with my bull mastiff. I researched quite alot on the net re dog horror stories and the majority have been cross breeds not pedigree but the press don't state this they only name the pedigree breed crossed with.
Iv never had any problems with this breed or any larger breed at all. Only ever been bitten by 2 dogs, 1 was a toy poodle when I was a kid and the other a jack russel a couple of month ago trying to bite mine and when I stood blocking its path to Dyno it bit my ankle instead.
