Has there ever been a time (in your memory) that driving was cheap
#32
I bought my first car age 16 for £85, when I turned 17 I took lessons which cost £5 a go (with an instructor), my car cost £134 to insure TPFT, I can't remember how much petrol was but I remember it was a struggle putting it in but a fiver would generally last a week
I was earning £32 a week at the time so no, it didn't seem cheap at all

That said, I can remember when petrol went over £1.00 per gallon. My father reckoned the end of the world was coming and was talking about selling the car and walking everywhere - when he started driving it was about 50d a gallon (which is about 20p iirc, but I was born after all the s&d stuff disappeared, so Scoobychick will have to correct me if I am wrong )

Well at the start of the year the only car I had was a hand me down from my mother which was free. (1995 Golf Driver on 130K)
Its bugger all to insure 3rd party only say £160 for the year. OK its still £200 to tax but it is surprisingly good on fuel. I fill it up probably only once a month but then I don't travel very far.
Pretty cheap to me.
I also have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee which ***** things up a bit as its a bit thirsty being 4.0L.
I'm also considering another scoob

Driving's cheap for me.
I drive £300 - £500 ebay classics , insurance is almost free for me, and I don't need a car as I use the train for work (which is free ).
I only drive for pleasure. I probably cover 20-30k miles per year, but that's in a 'work' vehicle and pretty enjoyable most of the time.
I'd cry if I was tied to paying out £100s per month on fuel because of work.

TBH I hadnt really missed it, and spent the last 18 months driving round in 2.5 tonnne road lard barges, and you know what the thing I have actually missed the most is the air con which I have in the scoob
mpg wise it seems I am getting the same if not better than the above mentioned barges
