I'm definitely not a mac boy but having bought the Mrs an ipod touch its a quality piece of kit so to have this with phone, gps and 3g will be very nice. What current phone has the same size touch screen and all the same features as the iphone 2?

iPhone 2.0 Launched: Price Slashed, GPS Capabilities And Faster Internet |Sky News|Technology
£159 for the 16gb and £99 for the 8gb and tariffs starting at £30 a month. So very glad I wasn't an early adopter! July 11th will be a busy day in the Apple shops, what's the betting you wont be able to get one without queuing up for hours and hours before launch day with none left in the UK after a couple of hours after launch?

you make me laugh
. Of course I am a mac fan, but I use, live and breathe both platforms and find faults in both. BUT when you use a mac and its integrated systems all day and see what they can do then you can make an informed choice. Also if you looked at the keynote feed you would have seen that they ran the new iphone up against the big competitors like the n95 etc in terms of 3g speeds, web browsing...

I expect they'll be very busy. It's a very good price and I think the tarrifs are quite reasonable - especially the £35 one.
Be interesting to see how much the PAYG is - and if it's unlockable (not that I want to)
And I liked the idea of activating over iTunes.....but the US seem to be making you activate in-store only.

Very interesting question. There hasn't been any mention of that functionality, and I would have thought something would have been said. It's possible that some bright developer could write an app for the iPhone that allows this use and I'm going to have a word with a dev chappy I know. One thought on this is that I recall some carriers will charge you a lot more if you start using your cell phone as a modem when it's connected to a computer, so it would cost you more as it would not be covered by your unlimited data plan.
BTW: If any of you want any specific apps for an iPhone running 2.0 software, post them up, who knows, they might get written![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
As for the unlock, one presumes this relates to the SIM being locked to the network, well, that's got a little harder. AT&T and Apple have announced that activation of the iPhone will take place in store and NOT via iTunes, so essentially when you activate the phone you're signing up for the contract. From the sound of it you'll not be able to purchase an iPhone and just take it home without activation. Interesting to see how they'd handle this if you said you wanted it as a gift for someone. I fully expect other Networks to adopt this policy as well.
I'd also expect there to be no free early cancellation of the contract, so you will be hit with an additional fee if you try and get out of it so you can jailbreak the phone. We've also got to wait for the hackers to release a jailbreak for it.

So if you can only buy it in store, what happens when you buy the phone direct from Apple? and their online store in particular...

"Where to buy:
iPhone will be available in 8GB (black) and 16GB (black or white) models1 at Apple Retail Stores and AT&T Stores."
So it would seem as though you will *not* be able to purchase it online via the Apple Store.
It does raise an interesting point about it being sold via Apple Retail Stores though, as that would mean they'd have to know a fair bit about the price plans an such, as they'd be signing up people for a contract instead of just giving them the phone.

Doesn't look like you can buy from Apple on-line - just in store.
Be interesting to see what they do in the UK, given that there is a PAYG version.
And as for Apps, top of my list is:
Mileage tracker.
I currently record my business mileage in a spreadsheet on my PDA. All i Have is a date, from, to (multiple entries for the day ie Location1+Location2+Location3+HQ) and then the total mileage for that day. Every month I record my starting odometer mileage and what it is at the end of the month
If I can't edit a spreadsheet on my iPhone, I'd like something similar that I can enter. Perhaps the GPS could record my total mileage or even add the locations from my contacts list. If that were the case, all I'd have to do was start the App in the car each time I got in and stop it when I got out. The app would automatically tally the mileage and visits for that day.
I'd need to have the ability to edit entries though......in case I..er....made a non business journey
. Not that I would. ![Norty](images/smilies/norty.gif)
I also have a seperate section when I fill up with fuel to work out mpg.

version 1.1 has already been slated for release with the 'wife or girlfriend' mode as default. Any such locations will be automatically removed at the end of the journey.
Version 1.2 will also see the welcome introduction of the ' rounding up' function especially for the accounts department
I am still compiling my list of 'me me me' apps I would like to see. I think my girlfriend is just happy that I will stop ****ing going on about the phone now![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Little does she know when I get one, I will be an ibore

PAYG? Is that a UK only thing then? I wasn't aware of a PAYG thing over here, well, ok the US I mean. I'd guess that when it comes to PAYG, you'd still need to purchase the phone in store, thus you'd activate it at that point, regardless of wether it's PAYG or not.
Wasn't there some mention of being able to open iWorks files under iPhone 2.0 software? Not sure if they would be editable or not, if so, then there is your spreadsheet.
I can also see there being an iPhone version of Office, which might help out.

According to MacRumours the iPhone has 'Complete iWorks/Office support'
The Apple website says I can view all iWorks/office docs.
So far It doesn't seem I can actually edit anything. An iWork/Office package for iPhone would be great - and you would think that enterprise would want that facility.
Does that mean you're not going to code our tax-man-tollerant-yet-wife-friendly Mileage recorder App ?![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Oh well, back to my list...
2. Office suite
3. To Do list
4. MMS send/recieve app
5. SatNav
Oh yeah, and the PAYG - don't know if other countries will be having it. There is no pricing on the O2 website yet either: Pay & Go - iPhone - O2
