I filled up my work beater today and there was an old bloke at the pump in front filling cans in his boot with petrol The garage was busier than usual but no big queues or anything.

Well he is actually right for once. The reason the pumps are empty is because of people doing just that. Whereas if everyone was just sensible there would be no real supply problems even with the strikes, but the protestors know that the media combined with the stupidity of the average Brit will make sure it is chaos in no time.

Oh and fuel prices are a global problem, not really sure what any one single government can do about it. They all need to get together and see the bigger picture, but you have more chance of finding rocking horse crap on the moon than that happening so here comes global economic meltdown instead

Here's a thought, this 'individual government' could lower the ridiculous amount of fuel duty we pay ? About 70% of the pump price is duty if memory serves me, therefore if it was 'duty free' so to speak, we would be paying about 40p per litre ! I know they would then have a shortfall in 'ripoff' revenue but they could of course use some of the money from scameras instead, or as a radical thought spend less of taxpayers money on benefit scroungers, fake asylum seekers, illegal immigrants and such like.

I'm not suggesting that they instantly do away with tax on fuel, but bear in mind for every penny the fuel company raises the prices another three go on in tax.

People out of work for longer than 5 years could be executed and rendered for powewrstation fuel

I would bear it in mind if it was anywhere at all close to the truth. Where do you get this sort of notion from, I mean you can use the net so surely it would take 30 seconds to find out that your statement is complete BS if you could be bothered to just look.

Fuel duty is a fixed cost not a percentage. The only thing the government get extra is the 17.5 % VAT. Not defending them, but even if they did reduce the tax it isn't going to stop global fuel prices going up - please don't get hoodwinked into the 'it's all Gordon Brown's fault' - this IS a global issue and needs addressing as such!!!

I know what will solve it all - driving slowly somewhere in a convoy - quick - to our vehicles - we have a point to make!

BBC correspondent Mark Simpson said there was no sign of panic buying in the north of the country.

People were buying fuel, but not in particularly large quantities in Cheshire or in Yorkshire, he added.
At least I live in a sensible part of the country

oil prices came down today @ $134 a barrell because saudi arabia are putting up production so if others follow suit it will come back down to the norm BUT how long is it until it reaches the pumps we all know when it goes up so do the pumps 1 microsecond later

My wife (and brother in law) work for a company who operate petrol stations. On Friday some of their garages sold over a weeks worth of fuel alone. Keep buying everyone we want another nice holiday this year!!

The local Bp station was out of unleaded this evening, not that thats a problem crappy stuff that it is.

Well only one more shift after tonight for me until wednesday, got enough fuel and if it comes to it, having family working in the business means I'll never need to worry...

Should make very little difference, people aren't doing and more miles (less if any) so your wife's company won't make any more money. Fine they'll sell loads today/tomorrow but come monday/tuesday everyone will be fill up so won't be buying then.

Im a bit miffed about BP vs Shell fuel for the scoob..today is the second time i have used BP,and yet again ive noticed the car is working better with it..I thought maybe the first time was just my mind playing tricks on me.But yea but no,the car is better when i use BP.Or maybe it's the mixture of BP and v power..

Well yes and no, as the companies selling fuel as a loss leader Asda and Sainsbury, sell out the other people trying to make living out of it get custom. People buy from where they can rather than shopping around. But unlike some my wifes lot don't fleece their customers by putting up the prices.

Have a look on Free UK fuel prices. 9,703 petrol stations covered - PetrolPrices.com, I'm not talking about just the VAT on fuel, I'm including the 'duty' and the VAT on the duty ! Two lots of tax for the price of one. How can anybody try to justify a government imposed levy on a product that accounts for 65-70% of it's final selling price ?

As an example £5 gallon of fuel, £2 actual cost including profit for petrol station, oil company etc, £3 duty for the government for doing sweet FA ?

A bit like Subaru being told 'a WRX currently costs £20k, however with our new duty on cars you'll have to sell them at £50k'

Overly simplistic and ballpark figures I know but you get my point ?

Don't waste your time with fuel protests aimed at the oil companies, if you think their profits are over the top, how much is the government raking in ?

Not that much more than it was raking in 6 months ago when no one was protesting. If you are protesting against the government now why weren't you 6 months ago?

all petrol station are fine around the cambs area.
all this hype is all about the price. they put it up by like 10p after a few weeks they put it back down but only by about 7p. people then think they have won as the price has gone down but is still higher than it was in the first place.

This is also when the introduce new initiatives and hope that no one will notice due to the attention given to fuel costs
