No way that a mapper can be held responsible for the state of an engine and even though you can say you can spot a shagged engine a mile off, it isnt a shagged engine that is necessarily the issue. It is the ones that are just a little tired or have a component about to fail. We easily forget that some of these cars are quite old now and the power levels that people are regularly looking for would have been supercar territory not so long ago and that expectation keeps going up. Every increase in power has it's risks.
However, if the mapper were to make a mistake in the mapping procedure then I think that is a different issue. I would expect them to do the right thing as I would if a car I mapped went pop because of something i did wrong. Whether they will or not is the trust issue to be concerned with.

As some of you may know, i did my own, both on the 2.0 engine and when the 2.5 was installed, to be honest i really enjoyed getting stuck in and working things out.
I did mine a slightly different way, in that i used the official apexi software (both the home user stuff and the dealer only stuff)
The problems i had with mine were mainly that all the software was in Japanese
I have said it before, and i will say it again, but i had more trouble setting up the twin carbs on one of my older cars, then i had producing a quick and easy base fuel map for the car.
I did not have to go to many extremes with my build, as i was using the stock intake and such, so it was mainly just sorting the fuelling out and then advancing the ignition until it detted, then backing it off a bit for a safety margin.
Did i enjoy it? hell yeah! i love getting stuck into things that most people would not attempt, i just enjoy learning new things.
Would i do it again? hell yeah!! i have been playing around with the WinOLS demo at the moment, with a plan to remap the MG in the future, only i need to learn another language at the moment to figure it all out pmsl.
Would i do somebody elses car? NO WAY!! far to many bellmiesters around and its not worth the hassle, although i have a mate who is getting his pro map done next week and he has asked me to take a copy of it and store it for safe keeping for some reason.

You could always have a warrantied package from Powerstation or Scoobyclinic.
PPP is incoporated into the manufacturers 3 yr/60 k warranty and is a pretty mild level to avoid issues, although mine still failed at 30k miles/ 1.5 years and was a fully IM serviced car.

If the owner was skilled enough to know the map was wrong, then - I suspect they would have mapped it themselves ......
I would like to know how many, and which, mapper did actually own up to an error and satisfy the customer .... I would suspect that most will, and they may believe it themselves, say that their map was OK.
I have said it before - Subaru and even on the PPP Pack are pretty conservative in their mapping ... they want their engines to last longer than it takes the mapper to bank the cash - so map sensibly. And this should speak volumes.
