Just my lil say on the matter....
Sod taking the keys and keeping them right by you and your family. Well done for NOT doing so.
Its a material object, which is insured. Getting hurt for the sake of such an item, regardless of value...... no thanks !
The robbery shows just how serious they were, so another pointer that you already do the right thing.

Perhaps a nice Honey Trap should be set, nice car, nice house, key upstairs, but mum, dad and the kids turn out to be some burly chaps with some blunt implements, chainsaws, bags of lime and shovels....
Any other circumstance, keys downstairs and let them take it if they want it that much, I would rather lose any car thn have my missus and kids frightened or harmed, kids end up not sleeping at night and women go into major panic mode when anything like ths happens, people end up moving house, it can ruin relationships as well as it can cause rifts.

Same thing happened to me 4 years ago with my then Evo FQ340. Broke in took the keys for my car and my wifes (had to move her's to get to mine) whilst we where asleep upstairs!
It had a RAC Trackstar fitted. The police never found it. Was thought to be a gang from Bradford.
My wife wrote to our local mp asking how many more cars are to be stolen from "this gang from Bradford" before the police act.
The mp giving his due took it up with the cheif of police but nothing ever came of it.
I always wonder what would have happened if I caught them, proberbly fought and either got badly beaten or killed, as people have said not worth it.
But come claiming on the insuarance was really hard work. They tried all sorts to get out of the claim, loosing the paper work, saying the car had finance on it when it hadn't, it took about 4 weeks in total before I got a cheque. I phoned them every day.
It's like it's was my problem that I got my car stolen and even though I had protected no claims my premium went up the following year.
When I bought another Evo with the money the company flatly refused to insure me unless I had it locked in a alarmed garage.

I have to have the Evo locked up overnight too or it isnt insured. Frustrates the seagulls, so no bad thing!
Still no news on the RS4 then? Prob in a crate to Nigeria already to join my STi Funny how the authorities can snoop on you for small crimes (like wrong recycling in wrong bin or snooping on your phonecalls http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/topstor...0-20595560/etc) but when it comes to bigger things like checking containers in ports...

My car has been found !!!
Don't have a lot of details at the moment but police rang last night to say they'd found it parked up in a strret in Halifax, West Yorkshire !!!
It has been rcovered, I'm off to pick it up this morning.
Wonder what condition it will be in though

The main thing is they left me, my wife and our 4 month old daughter alone.
I have often wondered whether to bring my car keys upstairs with me...if they hadn't found them downstairs would they have come upstairs ?? I dread to think what they would have done to get the keys[/quote]
Glad it's turned up.
Reading your first post reminded me of a TV programme I was half watching last night about heavy weight car theft. Targetting £100k cars and shipping them out of UK. One manufacturer, Merc' I think, were now developing fingerprint recognition. So you place your finger on some gizmo on the dash and this allows you to start the car. It struck me that these criminals wouldn't stop at chopping off a finger for a hundred grand motor Doesn't bear thinking about. dl

Been to see my car today. Couldn't take it away with me as the police hadn't done any forensics on it, and I didn't have time to wait.
Car looked surprisingly well. The most obvious thing was the false number plate they'd blatently stuck over mine Then noticed they'd KERBED ALL THE ALLOYS !!!
I couldn't have a good look inside the car but from what I could see everything looked ok. Obviously it could be a lot worse once I've given it a good going over but initial thought was thats not too bad.
I don't know how I'll feel when I get to drive it.
Will be taking the car to a secure location until I've the locks changed. Will then asses the car and get it put right. I'm sure the insurance company will be happier knowing it will be a few thousand pounds payout, rather than £40k !

You need the car assesed by a dealer for any damage etc.
i had a motorbike stolen once, took it into the dealer after recovery for quotes, etc
written off!!!
at best its going to need a full service, and geometry check

Got woke up at 3:15 am by the neighbour who heard his dog barking, then my car been started and driven off very fast.
Ran downstairs, they've broke through the back door, walked through the house into the hallway and taken the keys (from what i thought was a hidden place)
I'm dumnstruck. Never thought this would happen to me. Police have just left.
I'm in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. they believe it has headed towards West Yorkshire.
Please keep your eyes peeled. it is an 06 RS4 in Sprint blue. Standard other than a private Reg - MJK ***.

I have a white rs4, which was broken into this morning, they made a complete mess inside, all the cd's were on the floor, the fuel recipts were out of the wallet and everywhere, the back seats were pushed forward, i dont know what they were looking for (spare set of keys?) but who keeps spare keys in the car? they then did the same to my wife's a3.
They then forced open the back kitchen window and almost came in, untill they knocked a glass which woke us up! by the time i came down, they had gone.
but after all that, whats really confusing me is how did they break in to the rs4 without any damed without setting the alarm off?

They probably copied your remote signal. Keep an eye out for people loitering near you when you park it up. Although they already have the code now so can get in at any time mate

They can certainly copy the signal to another remote. Professional car thieves higher top end cars to strip them and find out how to steal them. As said above they were probably looking for your tracker before they took it. They could always stick it on the back of a flat bed.

Or is their a new device that can get past this?

This is why I always garage my car and the house and garage are alarmed. I don't think I could sleep knowing I had 50k's worth of motor sat on the drive for everyone to see.
Doesn't anyone garage their car anymore?

One of the ways that they are getting into these cars is not so much copying the signal from the fob when you press your alarm fob to deactivate the alarm.this is because nowadays part of thatcham testing means that modern alarms are fitted with random encription(alarm "code" changes everytime you use it, so if it's copied-when it's transmitted back, the car will use a different code).
The problem nowadays is the use of keyless entry which doesn't use random encryption.you just need to walk towards the car and it emits a signal allowing you access and the ability to also drive the car without the need to put a "key" into the ignition.
Jaguar use this system in the xf.We have them as company cars. It's quite cool, but obviously has it's flaws!
This may be what has happened to your cars as Audi use the same system...
Get a blackjax!!!

Very good post, totally agree with everything you say, especially the bit about leaving car keys downstairs. I would urge people not to take them upstairs...
Car was last spotted in the Potternewton area of Leeds, but Police officer that rang didn't know who or what spotted it, she was going to try and find out.
Thanks for all the words of support
Slept surprisingly well but we were shattered after being up since 3am.

I also keep a boston slugger and a stanley knife under the bed, ill do a better job of protecting my stuff than any uk court or the uselss motorist hating tax collectors we call the police.
If you get broken into and they see you pull a bat and a blade out 99 percent of the little robbing smack heads will sh1te it and do one, the other one percent just need persuading to leave by mr slugger!
leaving the keys downstairs is asking for a nicked car, especially if they are near the front door.

Exactly what I was thinking. Fair enough, some people don't have one, but if you do, you should use it.
