Have you seen the size of a lot of garages these days - they shrunk and cars got bigger. Just a store cupboard now....!!!!

Or perhaps if the laws and punishments where tougher you would not need to lock your car away.
TBH likely pro's nicked this and would have thought nothing of breaking in and threatening the occupants until they got the keys

That's the point folk are making though. They've insured their cars and would rather they were just taken than deal with the hassle. Even if you keep shotguns, for example, what are you going to do? Your choice at the end of the day, but if you end up shooting one or all of them, whoever they are involved with would probably not think twice about coming for a bit of revenge. Not sure about the possibly more casual nature of gangs of (asian?) youths from Bradford, but certainly you wouldn't want to be in any way memorable to the people that steal cars up here.

Well if people choose to stay in the 'hen houses', as I call them, that's their problem.

That's all well and good however if you wake up sleepy and disorientated with a group if men surrounding you smacking you around - a chainsaw is not going to help and could make things a lot worse for you rather than them.

These situations are just not like in the films or how you see it play out in you head going through a scenario...

Quite true, his justification is psychological. He leaps with his bedroom door locked and the keys in with him. They'd have to break down the door to get to him and the keys and will be quite hyped up. You have to ask yourself how motivated you'd be to break down a door to get some car keys if you heard a running chainsaw behind it
He seems to think it's going to work and its got to be better than laying in bed and taking it like a bitch....

Or you can leave the keys downstairs and not put yourself through what could be a life changing incident that will live with you for the rest of your life. Thinking you can do something like this is often different from the harsh reality.

We are talking about a car

Lol @ chainsaw, slightly random. Not the quickest thing to get ready for action, can be a pita to start at the best of times let alone 3am half asleep with someone kicking your door in.

Probably not that as that's a few years old ... current scam is a blocking device that stops the car locking in the first place ie you walk away thinking it's locked when it's not ...

I made this exact same point to him, he countered by asking how focused some thieves would be on getting to a set of car keys when they encounter a naked man holding a chainsaw in their way.

At this point, I had to concede he had a point

But why???

I leave my keys downstairs and easy to find, not in view from the letterbox but easy to find.

If somebody does break in the alarm will go off downstairs and that will give them just enough time to nick the car and bugger off.

Sorry but your mate and GC8 WRX must have a screw loose, why on earth would you want robbers coming upstairs to confront you and your family over a lump of metal? It's insured and can be replaced, what are you trying to prove?

I couldn't give a sh5t if somebody nicked my car

And when you eventually get the thing going there's all the fumes which will set the smoke alarms off and everybody dies of carbon monoxide poisoning.

You could use an electric one that you can just plug in but then you have the problem wether the cable is long enough, unless you got an extension reel handy.

You could always resort to a good old fashioned Axe, but when you swing it watch the head doesn't come off and embed itself in the ceiling, the last thing you want to end up having to do is re-plaster and re-paint the ceiling.

Maybe an electric carving knife would be better.

I can't believe I am typing this, but even if you were standing on the landing with a chain saw, what are you going to do if one of them shoots you?

If you get broken into and they see you pull a bat and a blade out 99 percent of the little robbing smack heads will sh1te it and do one, the other one percent just need persuading to leave by mr slugger!

leaving the keys downstairs is asking for a nicked car, especially if they are near the front door.

and when they pull a gun out what good is the slugger lol

it would go something like this

I have to agree, but I do take my keys upstairs.

Luckily my scoob is parked next to a tree and blocked in by the Volvo, I imagine that the youths would be too embaressed to be seen loitering about the Volvo

Also living in a 8 house cul-de-sac where a copper lives has it's advantages.

If someone did want my car I would not put up a fight.
But as of Saturday, it will probably be on it's way up to Glasgow

I had an attempted theft on my Impreza a couple of years back, I say attempted because the car thieves were too stupid to work out how to disable the standard Subaru immobilizer once it had timed out (and the neighbours were waking up by then).

In my case a gang of 4 youngish guys kicked a hole in my front door at 1:30am and set off the house alarm in the process. One of the guys ran upstairs waving a knife to control the situation (i.e. me and the wife). I remember shouting at him that the keys were downstairs, just take them and go. He did get really aggressive, thrusting the knife towards us at fairly close range but seemed satisfied when we retreated to the bedroom and blocked the door.

Everyone was ok, the Police were very helpful and the Impreza (completely undamged) was moved to the Mother-in-law's house the same night. Sold it within a couple of months because it simply wasn't worth the risk and it was never parked at the home address again (I used my weekend MR2 mk1 as a daily driver).

I do keep a 3 cell maglite torch fairly handy these days (for power cuts, obviously) but everything happened so fast that night that I can't imagine having the opportunity to take any of them on. I believe the local gang were caught and we are only just returning to the Subaru fold now (Legacy + Fozzy).

I had my 2003 WRX Hatch stolen when it was only 6 months old, broke in the house, the keys WERE on my bedside cabinet, i always took them up with me.....

They took the wifes carkeys from kitchen first, obviously didnt work, so then took mine - thank **** none of us woke up - me, wife, & 1yr old...

Never woke up, but when I did wake I had a really wierd feeling that I didnt sleep well & had a disturbed night - went downstairs to go to work, backdoor wide open, wierd I think, must have left it open last night, go outside... back gate wide open too..... sinking feeling.... yep gone...

RAC Trackstar found it straight away, parked up in a side street in nearby town, Po-lice went & fetched it, they had totally stripped out all the rear trim, seats, boot linings, boot floor... all gone.... never found any of it, had to have it all re-fitted...

So they do come upstairs - But I must have had some gentle, caring car theives - lol..!

NEVER taken the keys upstairs again - they want it, they can have it... sort of focuses the mind when you think we have a four bedroom house, with young children in two of them, how many bedrooms do they look in before they find the keys......?

Read on the BBC a few months ago, that the police and prosecution service are treating these sorts of events differently.

If you hear a noise and pick a weapon (knife, bat, stick, etc) and go downstairs - that shows intent to harm. Therefore means that your case is no longer self defense but an act of aggression.

So sleep with your keys and bat stupid own risk!!!
