The Queen has no real power whatsoever, regardless of what the statute books say.

Yes and there are even one or two who post on here although they rarely contribute these days.
Regarding the queen the only role model she has set is one of subserviant obeyance and obsession with duty to an anachronistic institution. Quite honestly I'd have the entire royal family shot against a wall for crimes against decency and the people. They are a bunch of sponging leeches who rely on craven, pathetic, kowtowing forelock tuggers to pay their bills and give them the deference they so obviously crave. Monarchy are scum whichever way you look at it,given privilege merely by an accident of birth. I'm an elitist myself but I believe in a meritocracy rather than some throwback to feudal despotism.
Also look at the state of them:- mishapen, inbred and they aren't even really British.
They take a **** like the rest of us, as far as I'm concerned they deserve a lot less respect than really useful people like binmen, toilet cleaners or doctors.

Lets not forget this women whom some of you hold in such high esteem took a diamond the size of a fist off the Ethiopian government while we were watching kids stave to death in the very same country. Did she say no? Did she sh*t!
What also makes me sick is that little sh*t Harry joins the army (publicity stunt) and then gets pulled from duty because he may get hurt. My mate’s 19 year old son was killed in Afghanistan 2 weeks ago by a suicide bomber but who cares he's just a commoner, Harry's life is worth far more.
Rant over!

Just to isolate this - Harry didn't get pulled out because he alone was under threat - it was because his position had become untenable, as any unit he was serving with would become a huge target. I.e. He would have been putting the lives of the men he worked with in extreme danger.

The top brass don't give a toss about joe private but they'll do anything to make sure the top brass i.e. Royals don't get hurt. His joining of the army as with all royals is just lip service and a publicity stunt to cap tipping idiots that swallow down the grabage.

Not convinced that
(i)They would take up the job
(ii)They would stick in the job when the going got tough.
(iii)Other heads of state would treat them, and therefore Britain with the same respect. I cannot see Dale Winton being accepted as head of the commonwealth.
Right, but then, that's hardly applicable to the British Monarchy, is it. Any more than countries that have dictatorships mirror the British political system.
I can see why republicans and reformists want change, but I am yet to see a solution that does not involve replacing like with like - In that it is a elected head of state, with all those inherent problems - Or an appointent person, with all those inherent problems.
THe Modern Monarchy really is the perfect solution. Not involved in politics (indeed absolutely discouraged from getting involved) not open to corrupt practises, not doing things to make sure they stay in the job, not self serving.

But how do you convince them to take the job? And which "Much loved public figure??" I can just imagine the heads of state for the commonwealth nations being address by Jonathon Ross...
As for Royals not taking up thier positions, I cannnot think of a single hier to the throne rejecting the duty.
The only one that springs to mind that abdicated is Edward VIII
The reality is that the Queen has no executive powers at all. It is ceremony and tradition.
Which is good and proper.

I didn't say that, I merely said there are very few who aren't several steps beneath me.
As for much loved public figure I was thinking of people like David Jason, Judi Dench, Basil Brush, Dale Winton, that sort of thing.
My comments about royals declining their rank was world wide rather than just limited to the now rather insignificant little backwater 'ruled' by liz.

I dont begrudge a penny, I would gladly pay double. The 66 pence is a bargain compared to the £1000 for every man woman and child we are putting towards saving Northern Rock.

There is no way in a month of Sundays that she has the remit, the will or the power to turn around and say "I am fed up of this government, I am dissolving parliament"
The Queen is a figurehead, a head of state - She is has no political power whatsoever.

Apparently the headlines aren't quite right...
The Queen effectively subsidises each of us. Shes paid from the Civil List, the money of which effectively comes from the Crown Estates (which are hers). This is about £200m a year, of which she recieves £40m. The rest gets plowed back in and wasted by the Government.
For the job she does (and the £2.50ish tax relief) I'm very grateful

Lets face it most our wealth as a country as been stolen and plundered from our old colonial empire so we cannot complain too much.
Seeing as we are a mongrol nation and have been for many many genrations we cannot complain about having a german hapsburg queen and a greek prince really

Right but she is not the one that makes the decision. The Prime Minister asks her in the name of tradition - Her response will be exactly what the Prime minister tells her to say.

I believe however that she has the right to do just that without having to be asked by the PM of the time and in spite of what he may think.

She might have the right, in terms of it being in the legislation, but , it is also treason to put a postage stamp on a letter upside down. By that IU mean it is utterly meaningless.
THe Queen would never ever, try to dissolve parliment of her own accord because
(i)If would be completely ignored
(ii)She would be condemning the Monarchy to the history books.
Liek I said, tradition and ceremony, yes, actual political power? None whatsoever.

You are probably right in that it would be a most unlikely thing to happen. She does have the right in fact but it would have to be for a very strong reason, such as the Government not staying inside its terms of reference.
I would not expect that it would be ignored if she did do it, it would be likely to be for the sort of reason that the country would support and it should be remembered that the Services belong to her and I bet I know where their loyalties would be.
