Previously the Subaru was, IIRC, more than 2 seconds off the pace of the Evo. It's not so much the .02 quicker that is important, as the fact that the easier car to drive on the road (which is where the Scooby has always lead over the Evo), is now also as quick as the Evo on the track (which had previously been the Evo's forte')! That's quite an achievement by Subaru!
It IS, however, ugly as sin Ok, but I'm not at all keen on the Evo either!
The looks can be fixed. I suspect the fundamental "rightness" of the rest of the car will unfold over time!

It matters BIG time, this is why:

I'm not an EVO v Scoob guy as I have both but the new STI doesn't do anything for me. I've never driven it so I won't slag it off as a drivers machine. However compared to a new age which looks so agressive I think they have dropped the ball. Who knows they may make amends when they hurry out a new face lift.
I was looking to get a new EVO but they are even uglier than the Scoob so ordered a GTR instead (18 month wait)

STi = £26.6k
FQ300 = £27.85k (GSR with nav etc £30.35k)
FQ330 = £30.85k (GSR £33.35k)
FQ360 = £35.85k (GSR £38.35k)
And FQ300 SST = £32.25k (paddle shift and GSR spec)
Take your pick, as said above the nearest to UK STI spec is FQ300 GS, so £26.6 against £27.85. Bet the evo holds its price better tho.

for me it was a no brainer. loved the look of the STi when i seen it in the flesh. the longer you have one the more you realise just how good the STi is. i always liked the practicality of the wagon(had a 280bhp 04WRX), but wanted the saloons wide arches and stance, and the new one certainly has those. i loved the 53 STi i had(approx 350bhp) but i wouldnt give this one back.love the look of the new evo, not as much as the STi tho'. People talk about the handling of the new STi, but mine handles better than my old STi with Prodrive and whiteline bits. As stated in an earlier post 80% buy for the aggresive looks, well i am one of the 20% who wanted to get away from that look,but still wanted a subaru. in all i am really pleased with my choice and this was just my two peneth, and all in my honest opinion of course

Ignoring the bullsh*t price comparisons from Clarkson (7K difference they said, 4k say others
) i thought the STi actually looked good in red. Had a test drive in one last weekend and thought it was a better car than my old hawkeye and previous classics. However having bought my last one brand new i won't be getting one till they are at least 12 months old.... if the M3 bores me by then that is ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)

IF you listened at the start of the piece in the studio with the old models its was drive the Evo round the Nurgurgring and drive the STI home.
Pity the track stuff had the FQ360
Come timed lap time, FQ300 is the tiniest bit slower than the STI.
I drove an STI and on the road it is excellent. As I don't go near tracks, this is the one for me.
Neither is pretty IMO. If you want pretty, buy an Alfa.

I think the last top gear presenter to actually test a car was Tiff. It's entertainment now. Zero to do with what we want which is a shame.

I reckon they had the testing all wrong on the programme, they should have tested that Merc Black on the track as, regardless of what JC said, it must be a more track focused car (with it's bucket seats and hard suspension, did you see how much it bobbled up and down on the streets of London - he just wants a discount on one!) and then run the Mitsi and Scoob on the Welsh roads which is their natural habitat. He could have still slated the looks of the Scoob (as could many of you
... but he would have at least been testing them both in environments they are kinda destined and designed for.
I know the outcome would be no different, especially comparing the 360 against a boggo STI. And perhaps I'm deluding myself as to the point of Top Gear, I genuinely believe Clarkson has lost the plot.... that Merc as an everycar, get a grip... £100K starting price, no rear seats, buckets up front and he want someone to put 15K to 20K miles a year on it as an everyday car, chump!
And what's wrong with a little praise for Subaru and Mitsi for at least making these cars in the current eco-warrior and credit crunch climate... and crikey a sub 5 second car for £25K or so, must get some merit for that?
Ah well, back into my blinkered "I love the 08 STI" box

I love Subaru Impreza's but the new car is horrible. I think previous models look far superior. In the flesh the new one looks a pathetic mess. The EVO looks fantastic in the flesh. You hardly see the new ones on the road so they are not selling many.
In fact I have seen more EVO's now than ever before so I guess a lot of buyers jumped ship
I think people buying the new one are not the same customers buying the previous models.

I guess that's your opinion but you are wrong about some buyers, I've had a bug-eye Subaru WRX in the past and absolutely love the 08 in comparison (and other 08 STI owners here have had Scoobs previously, I guess the market for buying a £25K 4wd turbo car is not huge on here?), chalk and cheese car both inside, outside and to drive. Personally my choice for the new STI or the EVO was settled at the Autosport show back in January, for me the back of the new Evo looks like an Alfa 156 and the front very Volvo like, neither of which I wanted. But hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, personally I don't think they got new-age right until the hawk-eyes but I'm not gonna slate them at every opportunity. I appreciate them as and even owned a bug-eye which I loved at the time. I'm off my soap box now, please continue bashing the new model
haha
Oh one last point, I've had nothing but good comments from everyone who has bothered to ask me about my car at petrol stations, car parks and traffic lights... so a new audience as well as some existing, so given it looks like a Focus, Astra or Kia I am constantly surprised by the attention it gets.

I think when you see the new EVO hatchback (which I have) you will actually prefer the look of the new hatchback impreza's. I haven't seen any evidence that they aren't selling. I thought Uk dealers had limited amounts to sell and no doubt it takes awhile to see lots on the road. At the moment I quite like the fact that I haven't seen another WRX on the road, ulike the large numbers of dated looking old models which no doubt will look even more dated when we start to see more photos of the new WRC car .

At the end of the day the new impreza is an ugly duckling without a distinctive quack, anybody who buys one of these new cars has no taste and must be quackers.
Its the worse looking scooby ever, its lost the unique scooby burble, its got no aggression at the front end and looks soft without a bonnet scoop. Its bland inside and looks cheap with all that plastic, their is nothing distinctive about this car like with all past scoobies as it blends into the crowd quite easily and it isn`t unique in its design as it looks like quite a few other cars especially the korean ones.

Oh, now you've clarified it for me I'm gonna sell up haha... To be fair ask most people outside of the Scoob community about taste and I don't think they'd agree that any Scoob owner has any?

What I really don't understand is why you'd buy an 08 WRX when you could get a 07 STI with naff all miles and (if you haggle) the same length warranty for the same money >???? And lose less on resale (likely although not many 08s for sale second hand yet so guess we dont know for sure yet)
I know where my money would be going
in fact just pulled off auto trader
2008 57 Reg SUBARU IMPREZA 2.5 WRX STi Type UK 4dr
Price: £20,999
3500 miles
(or a slightly older one with same miles but with PPP for similar money 19k)

Me I'm just a Saloon car guy so the hatchback will always appeal less to me compared to people who like hatchbacks, hench going for the GT-R instead.

Yeah I do agree about an image problem, they just seem to struggle for a corporate identity. In reality they are gettig left behind now by the Koreans so not too sure what there recovery plan must be, got to be centred around more sales with the new diesel engine. But until they have more mainstream designed vehicles and interiors I don't see massive sales for them - I'm happy to live with and aquired exterior look and hard-touch interior plastics but if they are gonna attract owners to the brand from Vauxhall, VW group etc. this needs to change.
And in question to buying a new 08 or 2nd hand 07 - financially that will always be a valid point, no argument from me about £££ losses on new cars and new Scoobs but when I went upto Stan Palmers to look at an 07 STI with low miles I actually only looked at it very quickly, I was sidetracked with the 08 STI which I test drive, never even sat in the 07... just didn't tick the boxes for me once I'd had a run in the 08, although I can see that it is aimed at a slightly different audience, I'm happy for example with a softer ride and a more anonymous look.

I guess im one of the new customers subaru were looking for. This is my first entry into subaru world.
I come from a background of a clio 182, Focus ST(modded to 290bhp) and a recent and short visit to the darkside with a leon FR.
I just picked up a 3 month old STI for just over £23k with only 900 miles on the clock it has 18" wheels, fog lights and front lip spoiler added by the dealer
these small mods make a massive difference to the look of the car.
It ticks all the boxes for me, its practical and comfortable for my small family, not as thirsty as my focus st and it can handle the power it provides unlike all my old fwd cars. There is simply nothing on the market that compares to this car atm for the price imo.
