Err. several of my best mates are Scots. No issues here other than friendly banter. I just know they tend to take more satisfaction from England's failings than their won success.... which I find odd. I'd be happy for the Scots to do well but it seems the Scots generally enjoy seeing England fail. They do say that is down in large to the stupid hype from the media around anything to do with England and the football team.

I'm glad Nadal won last night to be honest and I don't even care about tennis. Andy Murray has no personality, but this would be the case if he was from Sweden, Sumatra or Swaziland!

I love the Scots with their wild Ginger fur, translucent blue skin and enthusiasm for alcohol, they are a fantastic species and I beleive have almost 99% human DNA, that they play football is amazing considering the diet and cloven Hooves.
We have a tame one at work, he will do tricks for a can of Special Brew which amuses us immensely, he can do basic tasks and is eager to please, he occasionaly nuts people, biting was a problem but he is 30 now so has no teeth left.

It was not so much what Murray said as much as the way he said it. He could have put it more politely and no one would worry about it. I also put it down to youthful inexperience.
Personally if England was out of the World Cup and Scotland was still in, I would find myself supporting Scotland anyway-if only for old time's sake!
In the same way I was hoping that Murray would do well at Wimbledon. I think he did in fact even if he did get beaten by Nadal, but you can't really blame him too much for that anyway.

It is a bit of an inferiority complex thing, so the English should be above it.
The same thing happens with Australians and English(Poms) and with NZers and Australians(wan*ers).
The observation that you would rather see someone lose in any competition says everything about the observer that you need to know

Basically a lot of scots are carrying a humongous chip on their shoulder.

Cuts both ways.
Anyway, we're getting off track. My question was about why its such a big deal - not a Scotland v England debate.

You're right Ali, it is sad. I don't think a lot of Scots have quite gotten over the English pillaging, burning our homes, raping our wimmins, taking over our land and more recently, governing us. They can't return the favour in kind in this day and age (not that they would want to) so they mock where it hurts the most in a socially acceptable manner. Well, it's only sport isn't it.

In the past, yes. But not so much nowadays.

Although on the Man U/Chelsea final; even though I was supporting ManU, I wanted Ronaldo to miss his penalty.
Can't stand him; And he missed it in such a glorious way

I don't think it's so much that the English get annoyed that the Scots don't support England, I think it's more that the Scots seem to make such a big deal about NOT supporting England and make a big deal about supporting the opposition. Why? Is it just to upset your neighbours?
Can you imagine the furore if an England fan rocked up in amongst the fans of a team playing against Scotland and started waving an English flag?
For the record, the UK is short for the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", so NI is part of the UK.
If England is out of a competition, I will root for whichever remaining UK teams/players are still in it. Despite the reverse not being true.
Why the Scottish make such a big issue about being anti-English I don't know. Which is why I shall never be able to support Andy Murray, regardless of any success he may have in the future.
If an Englishman had made similar comments about Scotland, apart from being slammed by the public and vilified in the press, he'd likely get a visit from plod for inciting racial hatred.
