Yes, I probably could/should have done a bit more research, so I know I've only myself to blame for my moaning

I did think about PAYG, but it's not the same as in the UK. Over here, for example, you purchase a $20 refill card and it expires in 30 days time, no rollover. So if you happen to purchase one and don't use it, you've lost $20. To me it didn't seem to have any real benefits over having a contract.

I'm mainly annoyed with Rogers as we are a few days away from the launch and their information for existing customers is incoherent or non-existent. AT&T has some great videos explaining what the options are for customers in my situation, and there is an upgrade path, and it does not mention anything about having to cancel your existing contract and pay ECF's, plus, of course, they have unlimited data on all their plans, another bugbear I have with Rogers' plans.
Markus, you and me buddy. Same situation it seems.

My choices are :

* Stick with my LG Viewty and stop being a moaning minny (which will be hard ). I dislike it worse every day as the 3G on it is shocking

* Sell the LG and make a little back to go towards the cancellation fee
(which I wont do as it is a waste of money)

* have two contracts running, new iphone 3G has a new number so I have to give that new number out to all my friends and pay 2 contracts...never going to happen !!

* buy a second hand 1st Gen iphone jailbroken, swap my sim over and use that.

* Or emigrate to Canada and deal with Rogers

What are your options matey boy

For gawds sake man, it's just a phone, it's not life or death. Just be patient and wait until it becomes cheaper to get out of your current contract, it goes down month by month I believe. No-one expects an old fart such as yourself to be walking around with the latest high tech gadgetry anyway

I went to my local O2 shop this lunchtime and the bloody place was closed!! Looks like a badly timed refurb hopefully it'll be open and fully stocked when I return on the 17th.

Swiss, my original iPhone will be for sale - cracked or not, your choice - as long as I get over £159.00 for it I'm happy.

I've just had the following reply from Rogers.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us, we appreciate your use of
online customer service.

In your recent email, you have informed us that the iphone is on the
Lost and Stolen Program.

The Lost and Stolen Program is not only for people that has there
current phone broken or stolen. However the iPhone is not one of the
options.

The only two options to purchase the iPhone is new activation and upon
eligibility on a hardware upgrade.

I asked them if the iPhone 3G was part of the replacement program, knowing full well that unless there is airborne pork, it's not going to be on the replacement program.

So my options, it would seem, are to cancel my existing contract, which will cost me $400 (have asked them if this includes tax), and then sign up for another three years on a new iPhone plan, or to wait until I'm hardware upgrade eligible, which I think happens every year, though I've asked them to confirm this, and also when I'd be upgrade eligible.

I also made it know that as an existing customer, these choices are very disappointing indeed. But what do they care, if I want to leave then it's not as if I can get the iPhone with another carrier, plus I'd still have to pay the $400 to get out of the contract.

Sal, You are spot on, it is just a bladdy phone at the end of the day. I would like one, but I don't need one, and I wasn't going to be a launch day adopter anyway as I want to see bugs and such like ironed out

Dont encourage her for gawds sake

I have been offered version 1 of the iphone which will tide me over until January. I can put on version 2 of the software and enjoy all the benefits of that with just the £g missing which aint a big loss TBH.

It seems for you markus Rogers couldnt give a toss about its customers

I was going to babble on about having to jailbreak, but you won't, as you're with O2, who sold the 1st gen iPhone, so there's no problem with going to the 2.0 firmware and having to activate the phone as you'd want it with O2.

It does seem that Rogers CS are either uninformed, or this is what they have been told, in which case, yes, they don't give a toss, and it is somewhat ironic that the following is in the sign off of all emails:

You are a valued customer and we thank you for your business.

Yeah, of course I am, that's why you have no policy in place for me to get a new iPhone 3G without having to pay over the odds to do so!

Nice to hear that you've got some kind of alternate arrangement given to you Swiss. Could be better for ya but hey, as you say, 3g isn't much of a loss.

Cheers,

My arrangement with the iphone is entirely outside of blawdy 02 and something that I had to sort out myself. But as they say, where there is a *****, there is a way

The 3G loss aint that bad, the GSM is as I would have liked to have given that a go, but I shall have to make do with what I have

Ah, oh well, I suppose this proves that if you're gonna get something done properly, do it yerself , shame o2 didn't come through. Glad to hear that you don't have to suffer the LG anymore!
I'm just waiting for the operating system on my Orbit2 to corrupt, might go for the iPhone then, it seems I have more problems with Microsoft than O2, then again, who doesn't

You are not alone. My girlfriend had an 02 orbit with windows mobile and it was in serious danger of being flung across the room on a regular occasion.
They really are the devils belly fluff

The LG viewty aint a bad phone , just it has a god awful jog wheel, cant handle gmail and mac accounts (or any friggin email for that matter), cant do exchange support and the touchscreen is a bit pants. Apart from that it scores well on phone, video and mp3 player.

I thought I would post the latest reply from Rogers as it somewhat amused me.

Here's what I asked:

Thank you for the reply.

So, just to clarify. As an existing customer, who is *not* currently
eligible for a hardware upgrade, the only options are to wait X months
(could you tell me when I would be eligible, I think it's a yearly
thing, so as my contract renewed in Jan 2008, I'd be looking at Jan
2009, is that correct?) to become hardware upgrade eligible, or to
cancel my existing contract, which would, as I've more than 20 months
left, cause me to incur the $400 early cancellation fee (does that
price include taxes, if not, is PST and GST applicable to the price)
and then start a new contract upon purchase of the iPhone.

Here is their reply

Thank you for taking the time to write to us, we appreciate your use of
online customer service.

In your recent email, you have informed us that you would like for us to
confirm when you would be eligible to upgrade your wireless phone. You
would also like to know if the early cancellation fee will be applicable
to GST and PST.

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused to you.

If you renewed your contract in January of 2008 you would have to wait a
full twelve months to upgrade your phone. You would be eligible again in
January of 2009.

Rogers is not forcing existing customers to pay and early cancellation
fee to purchase the iPhone 3G. iPhone 3G pricing is very competitive and
as you?ve read, it?s a heavily subsidized model: The maximum early
cancellation fee is $400, the 8GB model is $199, that?s $600. To
compare, that?s the original price of iPhone 2G and this one is twice as
fast. $600 is also well within the range of a variety of our
unsubsidized Smartphone today (BB Curve $549.99; Nokia N95 is $689.99).

So, they don't tell me if the ECF includes GST and/or PST (the two sales taxes for Ontario), even though they reference that I'm asking about this.

They also say they are not forcing users to pay the ECF to purchase the iPhone, then they yabber on about an ECF of $400 and the subsidized price of the 3G and how it's comparable to the price of the 2G iPhone, which is irrelevant as it wasn't sold in Canada. Sorry, but how is that NOT forcing users to cancel an existing contract? There's no mention of something like the AT&T deal mentioned below

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the above reply does not answer my question. I have replied to them asking them to clarify things yet again.

I've also pointed them at the AT&T iReady - Existing Customers video, which details how existing AT&T customers who are not upgrade eligible - category 3 (ie; the same position I'm in) can obtain an iPhone 3G, for $399 (8GB), so that's $200 additional, which isn't too bad. It's certainly not $400 *plus* $199, which is just a joke.

Robbers? Yeah, that's about right!

ooooh, yeah I've had a few "should I smash this little piece of plastic and metal to a million pieces hoping it will act as some kind of O2 voodoo doll" moments. The old orbit was a bit hit and miss. The new one's been pretty good so far apart from the voice recognition has suddenly turned pap and you have to speak the queens English to get it to recognise any names "one would like to converse with Jonathan Williams" pmsl

I might get on and rip all the O2 firmware out of it and build it to my specs but then I open myself up to warrantee issues with O2 I suppose
Sod it, think I will actually, if it goes wrong, I'll just throw it in a river
<updates to follow> pmsl

Markus - Sounds like you're getting the right run around. Rogers are clearly bawl lickers. Give 'em hell buddy!!
