Pretty much from November through until April it hardly rains and you get many days in the 30's (dry heat, very pleasant) and most summers you'll get spates of days in the 40's.
Melbourne weather - Travel info - Victoria, Australia
Much less rain than Sydney, and although the chart shows similar rain during summer as winter, the summer rainfall tends to be late afternoon thunderstorms that come in and clear the air drops from 42 to 24 in a matter of minutes.
I actually find Melbourne's weather to be pretty perfect really - you get definite seasons, it's not humid, you can plan events all summer without fear of cancellation, it's cold enough in winter for cosy restaurants with open fires etc.

I can tell you are not from Adelaide, because if you were, you would know that all people from Melb. are complete d1ckheads and that Melb. is a total sh1thole.
Of course there is nothing personal in this observation.

Ah Adelaide.
Born there.
Been there.... 47 degrees.
Didn't see a whale.
The other exciting thing you could wait for, but not too long, is the biffo between Port Adelaide and the Crows. Players and/or supporters.

I'm living in Brisbane at the moment and would recommend over a lot of other places mentioned. Sydney - great place, lots to do but very busy and very expensive. Melbourne Ok but does get very cold in winter. Canberra - my Auntie lives there, she's ok but I would only drive through it at night with my eyes closed....avoid. Perth............................................. .........enough said, middle of nowhere then when you get to the edge of nowhere you're still only halfway there.
Brisbane, warm [not really hot like 40+, summer round 36 degs], humid yes as it's sub tropical. Close to the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast [Fraser Island], also close to Stradbrooke, Moreton and Bribie Island if you like camping on the beaches. Not too far from Cairns [not been there but hear its a cracking place], Port Douglas, Bundaberg, Great Barrier Reef.
As with work there aren't enough skilled people to cope with demand so wage ar pretty good and it would be likely you can arrange a company sponsorship.
So all that said Brisbane is my choice.
Cheers

Wheres the Daaaarwin option???
Spent time in most of the major cities in Australia as a backpacker - including Hobart and Launceston!
Melbourne - loved it! Such a great vibe and always something going on.
Sydney - It was ok for a week or so but after that I was happy to see the back of the place, far too busy and didnt have the same attraction as Melbourne.
Perth - Loved that place too, quite quiet compared to other cities but great nether the less, also the climate is good all year round (20 degrees in the winter!)
Brisbane - Didnt spend long enough there but didn't really grab my attention.
Darwin - not really a city, more a town as its small and compact. Gets bloody hot up there tho!
Hobart/Launceston - Small and really quite backwards... the local girls were really quite scary!!!
I voted for Melbourne!
