Sounds to me like your Mum over-reacted to a very easy question, I think (for what it is worth) that the salesman was initiating a conversation with [my interpretation] "Your husband is outside, Can I help you sway his choice to a car more to your liking"
To storm out, IMHO, indicates to me that
1. Your mum is a class A bitch
2. Your mum and Dad are about to get divorced
3. I am chatting rubbish

Got a phone call from my mother last night telling me about this little incident, now being an unbiased bunch and more importantly a few women on here I'd thought I'd ask the SN massive what their reactions would be.
Mum went looking at new cars yesterday, now mum is always well presented (she's in her 50's) well spoken, and says what she thinks. I'm not going to name the dearlership, I'm just after reactions.
Anyway after comparing a 18 month old model to the new 1 next to it, she wanders round the new model for a better look when a salesman, came up to her and asked
"Is your husband being seen to?" The guy got both barrels off my mother, she doesn't wear a wedding ring, she was by herself (dad was outside talking to a sales man from another place talking about the T5 Camper they have).
Needless to say, she walked out of the dealership after that.
How would you have reacted?, especially the women here.

Yes im afraid i must side slighly with the salesman
he was just trying to make conversation although he didnt prehaps say the correct thing but no need to jump down his throat and write to the MD how would you feel if he lost his job over it ? with a wife and kids to feed?
sales is a very hard job and sometimes people make mistakes human nature ,I used to train salesmen for a living and once my best salesman who used to sell half a million a year once sat down with a women and daughter ,noticed the wedding ring and said would you like to order a recliner chair for your husband so he can watch the foootie ?
silence woman said my husbands dead ...salesman grovels but woman walks out daughter rings up and wants the salesman sacked for his comment
sometimes wrong things get said but the guy was only doing his best .

I have found in the past Woman walk in to the showroom thinking they are going to get treated second class as its a "mans place"
So they tend to hang on the every word of the salesman.
Over sensitive to the situation, I think.

Also, if your mother doesnt wear a wedding ring and the salesman wouldnt have seen your father outside at any point, i very much doubt any salesman would assume she was a) married and b) with her husband.
Why would he ask if her husband was being seen to if there was no evidence of a husband even being present? Doesnt make sense!

Sounds like a pretty silly but typical reaction. Seems it could have been rather more of an opportunity to reassert and display that she was perfectly capable of entering into proper discussion with a goal to buying a car. She could have also possibly used the salespersons mistake to try and squeeze a further discount or freebies etc.
Instead she flips out and goes on a whinge fit then walks out - hmmm I wonder why women pick up all these stereotypes...
(n.b. Men do plenty of dumb **** entitling us to certain stereotypes, who gives a ****!!!?!? )
