They're not trying to dictate what people should drive, they are taxing people more who 'waste' more. Dictation would be banning Imprezas and the like. As oil is a finite resource it can be argued that what they are trying to do is unlimately in our best interests. Especially given the mess we've got into in Iraq trying to defend oil resources.

A decade or two from now you'll probably pay a few grand a year road tax on the most fuel inefficient cars. Taking 20 mins to fill a tank at a garage forecourt either won't make a blind bit of difference or you're taking about shaving pence off a fill up. If it concerns you that much about saving fuel in your Impreza check your tyre pressure, learn to drive properly and take out unnecessary weight.

What the op has posted is a cut and paste fallacy up there at the top on the urban myth roll of honour.

Had to look into this just for info mind, and temp and vapour can have an effect on the amount of fuel you receive, however it is so small it makes no odds at all.
If you want the figures the nozzle will collect 0.7 g/L of vapour while filling up at 40 L/min, and in my head that works out at roughly 6p lost in vapour on a 60 litre tank. Saying that if my figures are correct that adds up to some amount at the end of the year for the garage!

Blimey how sad am I!

Isn't this what a lot of Scoobynet is about???

Latch onto a few statements that may have some basis.
1) Fuel does expand with temperature as do all liquids in common use.
2) Fuel does evapourate...............slowly.

So Timmy fills an STi 3 that he has never filled before and compares it with an M/Y 93 WRX.

THEN :

Well Timmy, if that's right and there the same a saving of £6.50 is great I know its not a lot but when it adds up
WOW, another Scooby myth is created all the way from South Africa this time.

Clearly Scoobynet is alive and well with its full compliment of gullable souls.

There are fractional differences but they are so small they are difficult to measure for the average person.

In the past I have seen what I took to be trading standards or some weights and measures guys sampling and measuring fuel on several garage forecourts with containers open to the atmosphere. Perhaps someone working in a garage will confirm if they are still subject to such checks.
I am prepared to wager a substantial sum, if these checks still take place, that the fuel calibration measurement for weights and measures purposes is not temperature or evapouration compensated, simply because the variables are so small they are ignored.

Right. I am off to fill up with V-Power +N.F.............................................
SLOWLY.

But the garage isn't actively sucking fuel from your tank (but there's a thought). All it is doing is collecting displaced vapour that would have vented to atmosphere anyway. Therefore you have lost nothing, but the garage is doing its bit for recycling. But it can't be cost effective for the petrol companies otherwise they would already have this equipment. Therefore the 6p is a contribution towards increased running costs
