sorry i should of used grammar properly!! i was saying true about the vxr as i have drove one , but havent the monaro so have no reason to comment so i was going by what jeremy clarkson reviewed and it did look good and for the money good power.

that better? or is no one allowed a opinion or is yours the only valid one?

having drove almost the full VXR range i can say that they all handle extremley well (on a track anyway) and yes ok they dont handle like a VX220 - they are simply superb but the Corsa and especially Astra opened my eyes even the VXR8 handled ok for a big barge - this is from someone who has come from a Tuned AWD Scooby and thought the VXR's would be a pile of cack, i was forced to take off my blinkers after the VXR trackday.

I've never drove any of them on the road or any of the range of current hot hatches i.e. ST, Golf etc. so cant comment on them, but like i said they are very capable on the track at least.

If you want to drive one or in fact all the VXR range in anger i would recommend the VXR trackday for £99 - and you get to drive all the VXR range back to back.

Well worth it

I would say anything over 200bhp, but 230bhp at a push then I would want AWD or RWD.

I totally agree and that's why I'm happy running well over 400bhp

However, my point is that people who come on here automatically dismissing cars like the Corsa VXR as 'sh1te' or as 'Vauxhall crap' are being incredibly blinkered. Hot hatches in general and Vauxhalls in particular have come on a long way in recent years both in handling and power. I would venture that a car such as the Corsa VXR driven by a skilled driver in dry conditions could embarrass an 'averagely competent' driver in a standard WRX or even STI...

Yes.. conditions permitting I'm sure they'd stay close...but they are still hugely disadvantaged with the FWD in my opionion.

I've taken the older astra (god knows what it was..shows how much impact it had on me) a couple of years ago... and the traction control was cutting in so much when ever you booted it, roundabouts especially... no acceleration on anything remotely more than 1/2 a turn on the wheel, I just drove it back to the garage and when he asked me what I thought of it (eye's all bright) I said not enough grip for the power..end of... and the VXR's more powerful?!

haha it makes me laugh on here. As soon as someone mentions a slightly quick FWD everyone jumps to handling! ok so it wont handle as well as AWD but I think this thread was about straight line really. The comment about it playig with an 05sti I could probably believe. On the road theres next to nothing between performance cars unless you have silly BHP/torque. I have an 05 sti btw. When I had a clio 172 I could stick with wrx's in a straight line no problem. The only time I had a play with an sti was with a lad from work on the airfield and his was 340bhp. He only just pulled away a few car lengths, not much! we were suprised! Then other times, 106 GTI's etc were not far off me.

The OP did say performance which i suppose would include handling.

Imprezas don't handle well as they do understeer when pushed quite hard but what they do have is oodles of grip which i don't think this will have when pushed hard (obviously driver, conditions, tyres are all factors but the average person isn't going to care about this when trying to beat an impreza, evo etc).

As I said in my quote... if the conditions are well suited... we all accept the impreza's not a great track car... it's main advantage over the hot hatch brigade is grip under full acceleration...once moving..or being tailed by a lesser powered car on smooth tarmac/conc then that advantage is lost.. and the added power required to drive all 4 wheels saps even more... so no..it does not surprise me you could keep up.

But from standstill, or after pulling out a tight bend, then being able to control (and that's the point!) all the available power..the FWD car will suffer more than the 4WD.. that's just fact..nothing funny about it..

i used to have a Fiesta rs turbo which was pretty much standard, and in the right conditions it would keep up with a wrx no problems at lower speeds, the smaller engines with smaller turbos seem to have less turbo lag and weight, but they struggle when it starts to get the top end.

What are you lot like, i go away for 5 minutes and look what happens.

I was more on about straight line speed as he was clearly up for it and this was on a stretch of dual carriageway but i just got out of the gym so i was sweaty and cba.

But my car kicks out around about 1.5 bar so he wouldn't have lasted long.

As for understeer ive got rid of the worst of it, all i need to finish her off is a 2mm rear arb and stout mounts/droplinks.

Just struck me as curious as my car doesn't look standard, then again ive had wrx's try it on which i find hugely bizzare.
