We did, we had a helicopter flight over the top of it but didn't do the visitor centre although I quite fancied the bit where you can look out of an observation window in the centre of the dam somewhere We're speed tourists though so it was a case of stop, get in heli, fly over, land, drive on

We saw a the Hertz Shelby in the car park above the dam, it looked cool but the exhaust sound was a little bit disappointing, they need bigger pipes We parked our V6 Stang quietly out of the way so they couldn't look down on us for being the riff-raff that we are

The V6 makes a nice noise but not much happens, the only time we found it disappointing was when overtaking, the rest of the time we pretty much stuck to the speed limits having seen a fair few other people that had been pulled over by the rozzers The handling is pretty good though and the seats are comfy It was nice to get home to a faster car though

What she said^^

There was naff all water in Lake Mead when we were there, I heard it had dropped a lot more since! The helicopter ride is the best way to see the dam, you can't grasp it all when you're on it and the drive over isn't, well, scenic...and you can't walk over it unless you pay to go in visitor center.

Just don't look at the 'FAIL' pics that Swiss posted showing the actual helicopter, on it's side!

Hey Sal and Bob - your trip sounds amazing

Just one thing though - we could walk over the Dam when we were there...er... about November 2007. We had to stop the Landy before we could drive over it though, they wanted the tent opened/stuff taken out to be sure we didn't have any hidden explosives... didn't do a very through check though

We just parked up in the car parks at the side of the highway and walked back down spent a while looking at the Dam (Didn't go in the visitors centre though - very expensive) and walked back again

DN - Some info in our blog if you want any clues, we basically shipped our vehicle into Baltimore and did a big loop taking in pretty much everything up to Alaska/Artic Circle and back down to Key West

On the California side I loved San Francisco, Yosmites busy and has a crap traffic layout but is still stunning, if you can get there in the correct season for the waterfalls I'd highly recommend it, we didn't and it was a bit lacking because of it. Book ahead though.

If you can take in the Redwoods and the Oregon Coast I think that beats the pants of the Big Sur, but I think it might be a bit out of your way.

This is our blog if you want a read, Vancouver south is in 'september', California's in the 'October' section. Hoover Dam etc. at the bottom!

$59 each from the little shack in the hotel/casino car park on 93 on the western side of the dam to: 36.010553,-114.781959 - Google Maps

That was for about 10 minutes which is all you need

Get excited a bit more folks.... cuz we're all booked and ready to go!!!

Flying from LHR-SFO on Friday 27th October.... returning SFO-LHR 8th Nov.

V6 Mustang convertible booked - as I said, can't find an option for the Shelby one anywhere (I've seen mention of it on the Hertz site but can't find one to book!)

I've now got to put up with Mrs No getting all excited, reading just about everthing she can lay her hands on (it was videos of bears breaking into cars in Yosemite tonight!) and planning every last damn detail..... I don't do detail, I'll just turn up at SFO and say "Right... What shall we do, where shall we go?"

11 weeks and a day to go... so I was reliably told a few moments ago!

DN - rewatching "Oz and James" in California and still thinking about the RV that nearly was...
