young scooby drivers
#36
I think the point of the young drivers asking for tips on cheap insurance is because it is so damn expensive, you don't get as many people over 25 saying "my insurance is £550, i don't want to pay more than £400" Because its neither here nor there, but the difference between £3200 and £2200 is a big difference yet both prices are still ridiculous!
(I am 22 and pay £177 on norwich union every 4 weeks on short term car insurance)

Be careful who you insure yourselves with, because it does actually matter what kind of service you get if/when you do have to make a claim! I used to regard car insurance as a mere legal requirement. More recently I've been involved in some non-fault accidents, and having seen how close I came to losing my NCB (through other parties not accepting liability), it certainly pays to go with a reputable insurer who'll fight your corner. Always purchase legal cover too!

im 23, used to have a mk2 golf lowered 60mm with alloys, had my renewel through which was £600, but i had wanted a subaru for years so decided to do a quote, 3 years no claims, insured in my name £720 and added my boyfriend to the insurance for an extra £80. It had to be done the golf had to go and along came the subaru

Im 25 now, and bought my turbo at 21.
Paid £1300 to insure a metro worth f all at 17.
Impreza 1.6 was £1000ish at 18 £800 at 19. Bit less at 20. All FPFT.
Then the turbo at 21 for £1600 All mods declared, fully comp.
Now down to £850.
Mad money but paid a grand or so since day one so things can only get better.
Money well spent tho, I couldnt survive without driving.

For kids living at home with no outgoings its not that hard - if they arent paying much or anything for board & lodging, then a lot of them spend nearly all their money on their cars, probably because they need to get out of the house - living with mummy and daddy in your early twenties when you have a job is pretty sad...
If you had no outgoings for mortgage, bills etc... you could easily have a pretty crap minimum wage job ( lets say take home of £1000 a month or thereabouts ) and afford a cheap Impreza, insurance and petrol if you were prepared to spend most of your wages on it.
Plus with all the easy credit around over the last couple of years, buying the car and sticking the insurance on the credit card makes it pretty tempting.
I think a LOT of them have the cars on their parents insurance though ( which makes you think the parents must be pretty stupid ) as I know kids around 20 years old who are paying as much for little 1.2 and 1.4 cars on their own policy as some of these people claim to be paying for an import Impreza.
At 20 I couldnt even afford the furry dice to go in a car, let alone owning and running one, but then I did have my own flat, and I know which I would prefer to try and get a girl to come back to at the end of the night

say...
£25 a week lodge? (£100 p/m)
£75 p/w car insurance on modded chav chariot (£300 p/m)
£50 p/w petrol (£200 p/m)
Maybe I'm clouded, but thats all the outgoings I could hazard a guess at for some of the younger ones like myself, but who unlike me live with their 'rents.
And thats on proper Maccy D's minimum wage.
But then, to ramble on some more, isn't the minimum wage for under 21's only £4.60 Thats harsh (but more than I'm currently getting)

Subarus and Evo's are entry level performance vehicles and with the older cars now falling further in value they offer the performance motorist great value for money. Plus demographics are changing and money is now easy to get your hands on if you work hard or on credit.
I Had my MY02 STI aged 20, EVO IX aged 22 and will have my R35 GTR in June next year at will be 24. I think the older generations are looking for more refined driving experience and are probably in the RS4/M3 market

I got my first scoob, a classic wrx, when i had just turned 19, was paying 2k on insurance, and that was with some points! Don't get me wrong it took me days on end just constant phoning around to get that quote but try long enough and you'll get it.
I'm now 21, had 3 of them now and i was just under 1k for my99 uk turbo. Just about to get a v3 sti 555 v-ltd in a few weeks, got a quote last night and i'm only 1300 quid fully comp.
Yes all in my own name with the mrs as a named driver (she's 24) and my dad named.
I don't smoke, rarely go out drinking and i don't do drugs. So i save money by not doing those things as a lot of my friends are. Then they are wondering how i can afford a scooby and they can't!
It's an expensive hobby but as some rally driver once said, here for a good time, not for a long time.

I brought my first WRX 2003 when i was 20 and the insurance was £2,500 but my first car at 17 was a 1.2 corsa N reg and that was £1300 insurance so the £1200 extra for alot more fun was worth it. Now I have Hawkeye WRX and i'm 22 insurance is £1200 and I have my own house with bills but if you want it enough you'll manage especilly after you've had a go in one!

For the first time in my 15 years driving I have actually paid the least I have for years and probably ever have paid for insurance.
I'm now 34 and drive a 2006 Sti, I renewed in April for £550 fc. If my memory serves me correctly, thats less than I paid for my Mk1 xr2 when I was 17. I have always paid high premiums as I love cars and I hold onto my no claims discount very tightly.
I was chatting to a friend recently who was telling me how much his 18 yr old son paid for his 1.6 Astra, I almost fell of my chair..... for once, getting older has it advantages.

cd10 in pr-scoob, mods stated fc protected access £250 preams £459 this year 6 of the points come off.
I'm thinking i'm getting a very good deal.
