I think you should be able to buy your own equipment and also feel confident that no one will steal it like that. Its a poor indication of what things are coming to these days.

I hope they catch them and that you get it back undamaged.

I agree Les, it is a sad state of affairs when things like this happen. But I can't see anything changing for the better anytime soon, in fact it will probably only get worse.

Bring back national service in my humble opinion.

ScoobyL, what will you do now, buy another one for 24K? It seems a sad state of affairs when a vital piece of equipment for your business costs so much yet is uninsurable due to the risk of theft.

My other half had some of his equipment stolen by the passenger of the guy whose broken down car he was attending to (he's an AA patrol). I guess these scumbags just assume that the equipment is covered by insurance so don't concern themselves with the damage that they might be doing to someone's business. Or more likely they don't think at all. National service seems like a very good idea indeed!

Well quite. It's a known fact that crime didn't exist when we had National Service.

And of course, there is absolutely no way that people who steal, don't pay taxes, cheat and swindle, would ever do anything like, say, skip National Service.

I think you'll find that NS instills a sense of purpose/pride in people, core values for society if you like, nobody here is saying that it will stop crime overnight.

Does it?
So by association anyone that didn't have national service (i.e. anyone under the age of 64ish) is lacking those values?

So you're saying that society is (on the whole) improving then, and that knife and gun crime (in fact all crime) is on the decrease?

Thank heavens for that then, for a moment I thought things were becoming worse not better!

Pete, I honestly think that a lot of crime is committed by disillusioned and undisciplined youths who have little or no respect for anyone or anything, least of all their parents who they've watched living a similar, work-free, benefit hand-out, council house provided, anti-establishment lifestyle. They've no reason to assume that their own life will be any better so they sink into a pattern that replicates that of their parents as it's all they know.

What they need is self discipline, values, respect and a sense of right or wrong. Someone needs to teach them that and if it's not going to be their parents then maybe it should fall upon the state to do it. They need to be set challenges that they can undertake to give themselves confidence and self esteem and most of all a pride in what they do. National service is just one way that they could learn these skills.

Yes, on the whole, Crime is decreasing, as reported just a few weeks ago in the BCS.

(note - i answer a question with an answer, not another question )

Again, do you think anyone that didn't do national service, i.e. Anyone under 64, is lacking those values you spoke of?

Thing is Sal, I can't help but feel it's punishing the majority for the actions of the minority.

Most kids are absolutely fine. No problem at all. A very small percentage are trouble. So what do we do? Introduce National Service for *all* kids? I don't see the logic.

How about national service for those that aren't in employment, education and have been out of work for more than six months? I don't know, I sell boats not cure the country of all it's ails, I'm just trying to think of solutions to cure the country of it's scummy, non working, thieving underclass

And I'd like to see some of these chavved up, thieving, cocky scumbags get their comeuppance

Well Sal, you are spot on with the identification of these youngsters. I am surprised every day by the lack of skills I see in youths I work with. They literally have no respect for the things that people work for, think the world owes them a living and if they mess up, the state will pick them up and sort them out.

However, national service sounds good in theory, but I certainly wouldn't want my 9-year-old to do it when she's older, so how do you discriminate between those that need it and those that don't? I know, if you don't get 5 GCSEs at grade C+? If your family are on any benefit. Or maybe just target council estates... Hmmm

This would be my issue with it too.

I don't think you can have National Service for some but not others.

They are already talking about putting long term job seekers into community work.

If some teenager is sitting at home, not in education and not claiming, then he might just be a lazy buger, not a villain.

One possible answer is to look at raising the school leaving age to 18

What about raising the leaving age to 18, but you can opt out at 16 although you then have to do NS for 3 years.

Everyones a winner.

Ok then I see your point Clare and Pete, I don't have kids so I hadn't considered it from that aspect. However I can pretty much guarantee that your kids won't ever be in a position where doing national service as opposed to a life of crime might be necessary

What about national service as an alternative to a young offenders institution? Instead of sending them somewhere where they'll learn more tricks of the 'trade' send them to the army to sort out Although teaching them to use guns may be a bit of an issue

I get the joke dazza, but to be honest I think it would do some idiots a world of good to get a taste of real life rather than their wannabe gangster world.

I would reread your posts, and how you try to manipulate the argument as to it being the theodalites owners fault for leaving it unattended some 20m away!

and then tried further manipluation and trying for a rise by questioning why he purchased on instaed of hiring it - WTF is it to do with you anyhow?
Not exactly clever trolling - trolling nevertheless

All you seem to do is sit on the sideline waiting to snipe/generally be offensive at people by calling them trolls, if it's alright I'll just ignore you from now on in

The little offenders need stringing up to be honest.

Human nature (other than a few medical nutters) means that genrally speaking, people can distinguise between right behaviour and wrong.

so they know the risk.

no sympathy for anything that happens to them.....

god knows they'll be running the country in 20 years !!

I think the OP just wanted to vent his spleed and get a little bit of sympathy, as I would.

I think you should be able to leave a measuring instrument 20m away without some turd pinching it and subsequent BBS sniping when you post about it.

I offer my sympathy and share your anger, I hope that somehow you get it back intact and that the pikies that nicked it meet with an unfortunate, painful and humiliating end.
