Oh Harry,
I am hardly sat on the sideline

I just picked up on your initial posts and funnily enough they looked like trolling. You can play the hard done by and picked on by scoobynet for not agreeding. However, several other people picked up on it.
If enough people call you a horse - get fitted for a comfy saddle!

]Fancy leaving a 24K theodolite unattended in the first place, I assume he managed to get the registration number of the pikey charriot as he was only 20 metres away?

And then

All seems a bit daft, you can hire them for 220 - 345 a week which negates the huge initial purchase cost and risk of losing 24K when one goes awol.

And then

The difference being that your car is insured whereas the work equipment being discussed wasn't.

May I suggest that if you've had your car stolen twice you may want to consider hiring a car in future?

However you do change your tune somewhat and actually I wholeheartedly agree with “I think you'll find that NS instills a sense of purpose/pride in people, core values for society if you like, nobody here is saying that it will stop crime overnight.”

Have a good 'un

Not exactly clever trolling - trolling nevertheless
Paul, I read it that Harry Flatters simply asked what I was thinking when I read it originally. That question was answered perfectly by the OP and so it was put to bed. Ultimately the equipment shouldn't need protecting from thieving scum but it shouldn't hurt or be regarded as trolling to ask why 24k's worth was left on its own. I'd have had you down as being somebody to have actually at least thought that as well, to be honest.

Threads shouldn't necessarily follow a straight path either as a lot can come out of them if there are a few mildly diverse topics that stem from the original post. I see nobody has complained about the national service 'shoot off' that is equally 'trolling' if ever there is such a overused word.

The hire versus buy topic was also something many would find interesting as long as the figures put forward are factual, which in this case both the OP and Harry thought they were. Getting a definitive answer from this would be more interesting to some.

Oh and before anyone asks why I'm defending Harry Flatters, I'm not, I know his main username. I'm defending fairness. Harry has posted a load of snót elsewhere on a couple of occasions but here he didn't, in my opinion.

OP, I hope you get the equipment back and the ***** are shot.

It looks expensive but surely the thieving pikeys were actually after the tripod it was sat on, as being amatuer photographers, they wanted it

well I had the day off work the other day, was washing for once my scooby- this is a rare occurance.

pikeys drive up my/our private drive in a transit tipper- I stop them and confront them-- oh yeah mate we're just looking for scrap. told them to sod off- they are trespassing and they want to get back to council estates for that

one of my neighbours is building a hse in his back garden- so it seems to draw thieving scum types.

have a good old exchange of words and me thinking "well I don't fighting much with these two"

thought best plan was carry on washing car !!!!!! after some more pikey abuse they sodded off and I then caught them in a neighbours garden having a poke about.

I;d just put people down like this- can't see what purpose they serve, really can't.

anyway- hope you get yr gear back....... quite rightly who would think someone would nick it whilst yr actually using it !

That's irony for you, have a nice cup of tea, go back through the thread and find that phrase within it, anywhere within it, because you won't.

You've just made that quote up, for some strange reason and I suggest that you keep the offensive "Stupid ****" comments to yourself in future.

Hey I'm back.

Scoobychick: I've got a spare instrument (another advatage to buying you equipment not hiring them) so I've sent him out to another job with that.

I've no plans to replace it yet, as I said... I can keep my 3 teams going still...just using the spare instrument (which is getting old now but still works perfectly well)

HF...I fear you do not understand the technology involved... surveying instruments are not "fast moving" in technological breakthroughs like the rest of the electronic world.
The spare one man gear I have is now 10 years old, and even though I'd not like to rely on it long term (old age) It's just as quick/technologically advanced as new ones still being sold.

So you'll actually replace the existing hardware around three times in that same 22 year period. I could also go into the capital outlay of 96K amortised over the seven years (even as a discounted cash flow) opposed to the hire costs for the same period.

And yes I do run a successful business, and no its not hiring equipment, but anyway, I do hope you get it back
Not wanting to Drag this little gem up..but I will... as you may (or obviously didn't) have noticed I used £24k times four, where as (as you have stated) the kit was orignally £15k, then £17.5k then £18.5k then £24k, total figure £75k. Another £21k cheaper than my actual figure.
So I was trying to help you not look even more of an idiot...and you still managed (by trying to be clever).

I'm Sorry, I failed.

I think they will just bin it when they realise it's useless to them..and un-sellable.

So a perfectly good piece of gear will be trashed because someone cannot keep their greasy hands off what's not theirs to take.

Please clarify as your post seems confused; are you saying that ORIGINALLY the equipment cost 15K per item 22 years ago, and then over the years has increased with inflation etc. to 24K today? or are you saying that you've bought 4 items over the 22 years (which is strange to think that you're still using 22 year old equipment). Then you even say in your post that you change it every six years?

I could , but I won't, because I don't now need to

i wonder if in the future they could have a built in tracking device, so you could see what your men are upto and also it would record a gps location for what ever location you used it on, and of course it would be found if it was on.
just a thought, hope you get it back though mate

ha ha

Nooo..I said that I replace the equipment every 6 years...? what's so hard about that to grasp? in that time the 1st replacement cost me £15k, the 2nd £17.5k the third £18.5k and the last was £24k..total cost to me over a 21 year period £75k. That's not taking into account trade in equity.

Now..If I had HIRED the same equipment it'll have cost me (using your own figures... so why start challenging me about them?) ok lets take an average of £100 per week over 21 years..(which is stupidly lower than real life but to make you happy) gives you £105k.. so in 21 years I've OVERSPENT to the tune of £30k, which gives me a free piece of kit plus extras... am I being think?

and where has the 21 year old equipment come from? I replace them EVERY 6 YEARS!... so they are between 0 and 6 years old at any one time? Apart from the spare one I keep in the shed
