I don't believe in infracting generally, but I must say that I find those comments extremely offensive, and I was tempted. . . but resisted.

5 gcse's at grade c+? I know plenty of people who left school at 16 with no quals who are doing very well for themselves. Likewise, I know a few thugs who are qualified to degree level. Go figure?

Family on benefits? So someone's got cancer, maybe they're in a wheelchair, on mobility allowance (a benefit) does that automatically mean they'll be scum? and their kids too?

Council estates? My favourite! Usually populated by people on jobseekers allowance? Not in the 21st century! Studies show that almost half the people living in local authority housing are actually working and paying rent/council tax and saving up for a mortgage.

In the future, with the price of houses/fuel/food etc. there will be a whole generation who won't be able to buy a house, and many will have no choice other than rent a council house! Who knows if your children/my children could be that generation?

Trolling pointless posts.

These things do occasionally get stolen, usually from big companies that BUY - not HIRE them. Wonder why these successful businesses do that instead of hiring if it will cost them more, according to you??

This issue has been fully resolved (if you read the tread you would already know). I would clearly suggest that by you digging this whole subject up again it is you who are actually attempting to troll this thread, but don't let that stop you!

A recent poll by a newspaper I read at the weekend said that more youths carried knives in the '60s than today.

National service is not the answer for anything IMHO. A far simpler and cheaper way of reducing crime would be to ensure that children can read and write instead of the constant testing and table culture that seems to have sprung up.

I agree that education is a key factor, but could it be introduced effectively and in time to turn the current tide of lawlessness?

I'd like to know the amount of fatalities during the sixties, I'm sure those records would be held somewhere, just to compare and establish a real benchmark.

They've no reason to assume that their own life will be any better so they sink into a pattern that replicates that of their parents as it's all they know.

What they need is self discipline, values, respect and a sense of right or wrong. Someone needs to teach them that and if it's not going to be their parents then maybe it should fall upon the state to do it. They need to be set challenges that they can undertake to give themselves confidence and self esteem and most of all a pride in what they do. National service is just one way that they could learn these skills.
Thats as good an answer as you will see!

Depends if you define fatalities as "murders"

The murder rate in the 60's was around 7 people per million
It is now around 12 people per million.

So yes, it has risen, (by 50%) but in real terms by a very small amount.

Hi Pete, how old are these figures, do they take into account 07/08?

Wasn't (forgive me if I get this wrong) there a quote about more knives being carried in the 60's than today?

If that's the case (or even if not) it would allude to the level of violence doubling dis proportionally to the number of knives being carried, i.e: getting worse?

The figures aren't compiled for 2007/8 yet. However, there is no indication that there will be any significant jump in the murder rate (despite the 21 london teenage victims)

http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs07/hosb1107.pdf

There were 19,157 "serious crimes against the person" I.e. Murders, serious assault, death by dangerous driving, etc.

Out of those, there were 755 were defined as being "Homicide deaths" (Murder, manslughter and infantcide) and thtere were 636 attempted murders.

I think someone said that there was a poll in a paper that said people are carrying more knives, which is somewhat anecdotal.

Ther perception is that more people are carrying knives ( a perception I share). But the actual number of reported assaults etc doesn't indicate any significant increase.

It's also worth remebering that the amount of deaths will be affected by the advances in modern medical research, response and care which will mean that far more people will survive an attack in the 00's than would have in the 60's, making comparisons difficult.

I seriously believe that the morality rate would be greater if you weighted the results to reflect this, and that way the picture would be different.

Quite possibly, in which case you need the "Serious Assaults against the person" figure, which includes deaths and assaults" for some time in the '60's which may exist somewhere, but needs access to records not yet interwebimyfied (Murder rate however, was)

I've literally just collared two little ******* in the car park at work on mountain bikes - instinct told me they were up to no good, but as i confronted them same old s*** 'just seeing if they were any jobs mate' yeah like **** - then why did your mate not want to show his face.

Thing is there was nothing i could do, i really wanted to knock the f*** out of the pair of them as my stepmothers car was broken into last week and it wouldn't surprise me if knowing that most people vacate the building at lunch thought they'd have a second bash.

c**ts!!!!!!
