I seem to be going round in circles a bit here, I'll just have to wait and see how it goes when I fit the engine I think

if you can post pics of things like the inlet manifold etc then we can identify the engine is what you hope it is before you fit it.
Its unfortunate you didnt do any research before taking a punt however there is no reason why you shouldn't be alright with a trailing wind and your fingers crossed

The inlet manifold is not included but I'll take some pics ASAP.
I did do research, API engines have a great reputation but I simply cannot afford to use them. I went with a company that had a landline contact number and good positive ebay feedback, also checked on google for forum posts and any problems people had were resolved quickley. I went for a recon engine with warrenty to ensure I didn't fit it and have it mess up straight away.

Finally can provide an update guys.

Engine is in and seems to run not too bad bar the check engine light has come on and i think it may have a slight missfire.
Should I be looking to fit a V3 STi ECU and if so would it plug into the multiplug ok without throwing a wobbly?

Very intersesting indeed, Ive seen these guys and for the price it just can't be true! Does the engine show any signs of re-building, i.e. hew headgaskets, evidence of bolts undone, new sealant on sump? Sounds like a scam to me? 'Spend cheap, spend twice' I always say.

It's the usual deal with an ethnic breakers yard. As my Australian business partner of many years ago said; " Those guys have more moves than a Sh*thouse rat."

I have lost count of the number of disappointed Subaru engine/gearbox buyers that have eventually got to me after having had major trauma trying to get back the money for the manky old Legacy engine or box they have been sold.

It's always the same story, that they guy who they were dealing with is suddenly not available, and no-one else knows anything about it......

IF you must deal with companies like this, only ever pay by credit card [ not even debit card ] as you will eventually get your money back via the card issuer. Pay any other way and your money is gone.

AND ask Trading standards before you commit.

I know a chap who has just fitted an STI engine into a MY96 UK Turbo. The fuelling and timing appear to be all over the show when the engine is under load. I came to the same conclusion re the cam profiles causing the misfire.
I think the ECU was a UJ 7D - not sure if this is re-mappable to suit the new engine?? - Does Mr O'Brien know per chance?

As peanuts says. Or a Simtek for a proper job.

BUT tell your mate not to run it at all any more until he can get it done, as the boost control and fuelling and ignition maps are way off and you'll damage the engine very quickly. Wait 'til it has been mapped.

Deffo not been rebuilt, head gasket needed changed but they do claim its reconditioned not rebuilt, it had been cleaned up but i doubt the did any stripping down bar taking off auxilleries.

With regards to remapping what would be the best budget option as I dont want to kill this engine too but i am on a tight (almost non-existant) budget. I no you get what you pay for to some degree but the amount I've spent on it means I've had to resort to sticking to budget options where-ever possible

If your remapping option is financially led, then it has to be the ESL daughterboard. As an example JGM will spply, fit and map it for £550 + VAT. Plus, he can travel to you - just pay for his fuel on top.

Cheaper to get a remap now rather than another engine and a remap later
if i had to drive it i would not boost it at all but thats me
do as david(api)says as hes seen it all before and obviously knows his stuff

joz8968 is right, that's your cheapest worthwhile option. Do it, you know it makes sense.

Unless of course he tries to source a 2nd hand Apexi or ESL board on here to save even more readies.

Whether new or second hand, I'd still opt for the ESL as it keeps all of the OEM ECU's great input/output sensors/features, including the excellent IAM (ignition retard/advance) feature.

But as everyone is saying, seeing as you've just acquired this fresh engine (and lets pray it's a good 'un ), now's the time to strike and get remapped asap. As APIDave has said, stay off boost until you have it mapped... then enjoy to your heart's content.

I'm waiting on a tax rebate and should be aquiring a wee pug 106gti which I plan to fix (well get a mechanic friend to fix) and sell on so hopefully I will have the cash to get it mapped sooner rather than later.
