Yeah I know, but he quoted my post which suggests he is going to make a comment about the relationship between my car and it mileage and spending a lot of money on a car one hardly uses. Can't see the relevance.

because while you do make valid points most of the time i just wanted you to answer the thread, you always seem to go into the cost of a subaru to run. Why peoples choices are so important to you is beyond me. We all know scoobys are not cheap to run/insure. Some of us drive them everyday because we have to and love the car, some of us(myself included) are fortunate to have a company van/car. The point is we all know it doesn't make financial sense to do alot of miles in one, just the same as not doing any miles in one isn't either. We're all on here because we love scoobys not for constant financial advice.

******* AMEN to that!

(From 'a corroding classic' owner)

For the record, I used to average about 240-250 a week in my red classic Scoob beofre I sold her. I would find excuses to go out and drive her, smiling every minute.

In a typical week I'll do 200 miles and put about £40 in the tank.

And you've just answered my question. Thank you. I wasn't being rude or unpleasant, just simply asking why someone would spend a lot of money on something they hardly ever use and as a consequence have to spend most of their time driving an old banger. If you genuinely love your car that much then fair enough.

On your other point, about why I take an interest in other people's financial planning, I'll come to that in a mo. But first I will just let you know that I will soon be taking a self-enforced break from this place for that sake of my blood pressure. The Mrs said to me a few minutes ago, "I don't know why you bother because you can't change people". And she's right. I can sit here and talk total sense, but in the end there are enough people on here talking complete and utter financial nonsense that I can't compete against the shere weight of numbers and a total unwillingness to look facts in the face.

What is unfortunate is that a lot of the people I am talking to on this site will be the ones living off state handouts in the future and that will affect the amount of tax I pay on my pension and the access I have to public services which will inevitably be rationed so the people who ignored common sense can have some quality of life. Did you see that the number of pensioners now outnumber the number of under 16s? Who is that going to affect our taxes I wonder .

You are right in that I have probably gone too far. What is a shame is that an element of financial reality would be a real asset to Scoobynet. The "you only live once" brigade won't have it though and so many member will continue to cobble together the money for the many expenses associated with this car despite the financial strain it puts on them.

I'll make a few more posts on threads I'm already contributing to, but this is me beginning the long, slow sign off.....

you are right matey and in other threads there are people giving bad advice, but (and you've admitted this, fair play) it just came across as preaching in some threads about finances all the time. Its just this is 'scooby' net so i don't think anybody buys one for its mpg or its value holding qualitys

p.s i wouldn't come on here if i had high blood pressure , also if i did want financial advice you'd be my first call because you make total sense.

I appreciate all the usual arguments about beaters and weekend cars, but surely there comes a point where basically never using it becomes the overwhelming argument?
I have 3 cars, I had 4 until the baby arrived, I had 2 and the wife had 2. I service the scoob myself I only tax it for the summer and insurance costs 40 quid a month, pretty cheap I think.

It has 2 race seats and no trim and you need ear plugs when you drive it, hardly an every day car. People own cars for all sorts of reasons we don't all use them as our daily hack. If you can afford you use it just the odd weekend then why not?

Same situation with me, minus the wife and 2 seater car...

I do about 65 miles a week average, they pay me to drive during the week and provide the vehicle and fuel, so I'm happy.

BB you keep saying it costs, we know that, but the car mags told me mine would be worth 33% of it's purchase value within three years....

Yet 6-1/2 years later I can still get 33% of the cost price.... Work that one out !

Apart from servicing, the only parts have been the usual "service items", and new discs and pads on the front. Up-grades are a separate issue, about which I expect you to educate me further.

BUT 900 miles a week in a Scooby

Bye for now.

DunxC

P.S. I sacrifice a decent summer holiday each year to fund mine, or is it just because of our crap weather ?
