I actually find that offensive. For whatever reason someone chooses to be a heroin addict. No one forces them. If heroin didn't exist would they still be ill? Of course not. The closest thing to an illness that these conditions are is the fact they can be cured.

Diabetes is a genetic issue and is something that can be treated and not cured and your comparison is out and out wrong.

Why not compare it to Mr Glitter? Some people will tell you he has an illness, possibly even an uncureable one and he can't help himself, it isn't his fault, he's ill see? There has to be a point where people take responsibility for their actions, simple as.

Fundamentally, the term illness is something of a dustbin category and can be used to imbue what is essentially abhorrent behaviour with medical status, thus mitigating how blameworthy society deems the individual.

I don't think one can liken a condition caused by willful administration of a narcotic (and an illegal one at that) with a condition, the occurrence of which is largely out of the afflicted's hands!

Do you? Oh well, blame the Medical profession, then, they're the ones defining it.

Drug/Alcohol Addictions are classified as diseases.

Type 2 Diabetes, for example, is largely caused by diet and lifestyle. - Willful administration of ****e food and no exercise

It is a risk factor, but the critical difference is that people who aren't obese still get type 2 diabetes, no-one who is teetotal has even become an alcoholic!

Alcoholism even affects animals! We must act now!

Had too many friends lost to booze, some started at a very early age and they had no excuses, since they had "everything"..........

As far as junkies go, unfortunately I have seen a couple of families being torn apart.......

Glock 17 would be the best treatment imho.

I would have thought it painfully obvious the point I was trying to make.

In any event, Doctor, what would you say were the main contributary factors are to type 2 diabetes, then?

Oh the irony, Pete, you tarred all Diabeties sufferes with the same brush with your initial post comparing Diabeties to drug/alcohol addicition.

You of all people - with your penchant for defending pretty much anything managed such a fau 'par

No, you decided to take it that way, which is your decision, I don't deal in semantics.

The comparison I was making was clear, and in the medical world, there is a debate as to whether addiction is a Physical illness, like diabetes, or a Neurological one.

Do some googling.

All over the country the chattering classes are spitting yogurt or lentils all over their Guardians;

The help always seems to be for the poor souls who got themselves into the mess and not the families - unless a charities get involved.

An awful lot of problems could be sorted out if some people stopped using excuses, being selfish and self serving/centered and took some responsibility for their lives and showed some respect for others.

Semantics - really - Pete you stated Diabetes, not mentioning the different types mate.

The hole was dug by you, accept it and take your licks.

I know that you meant type 2 however does everybody, appears not.
