How long did your shocks last?

The car is put on a test bed and all 4 wheels are placed on some 'plates' which vibrate at high frequency. The damping is then measured and give you a % of how good the shock absorber is. Bear in mind that this testing stresses the shocks quite a lot so unless you have suspicions that the shocks are shot or have high mileage don't do it.

Thanks for such a quick reply fpan. Car has 90k miles on the clock and is still on the oe suspension. I was thinking of renewing next year but wanted to test first. Could I ask, does every main dealer have this test bed or is it a case of 'phoning around any garage to find out who has one ? It has never been done for an MOT to the best of my knowledge .

I have seen it at a specialist garage (suspension-tyres) in Greece. I haven't seen any dealer having it.
You'd better change your shocks or have them checked as 90k is considered high mileage for the suspension IMHO.

Yep, same problem with my 05 Sti. Rear nearside shock sounded like it was about to fall off !!
Just had them replaced with Tein Super Street with the top mounts
Now that's better!

Just booked mine in for them checked on Friday. Spoke to the dealer and told him that I thought they'd gone. He asked why I thought that and after I described the knock/settling he said he would order a set in. They will change them then if they think they have gone.

Holy crap!
Nearly bit the dust since the last post! LMAO
Went to the shop to get something, so I took the long way back home, during which I entered a 'correctly' cambered downhill corner a bit faster than usual (this was planned) only to find myself on the opposite side of the road waving about like a tosser upon exiting said corner!! (not planned!)
It all went very fast, but started with the tail "taking off" and then unsetteling the front! The car felt like a waterbed/oil tanker/barge!
It took the car 3 "movements" to get it's act together (without me trying to correct it....who knows).
I guess I needed a change in underwear and to remove my nails from the steering wheel to get the message!

Dunno on that one, but mine is an MY07 Hawkeye WRX, so unless they've changed the shocks, I would have thought so. Wonder if it's anything to do with the number of speed humps we have??
